Miami Star Wide Receiver Malachi Toney Questionable for Notre Dame Showdown

The standout pass catcher is dealing with an ankle injury ahead of the crucial Saturday night matchup in South Bend.

Miami Hurricanes star wide receiver Malachi Toney is facing an uncertain status for Saturday's high-profile prime-time game against No. 11 Notre Dame due to an ankle injury. ESPN insider Pete Thamel reported the injury development, noting that the standout sophomore sustained the issue during practice and is considered a game-time decision for the pivotal matchup.

Despite the concerning news, Toney is expected to push to play in the contest at Notre Dame Stadium. The 19-year-old participated in a full Zoom media availability session on Tuesday, indicating the setback may not be severe or long-term. Because this is a non-conference regular-season game, official injury reports are not released, leaving his availability to be determined upon kickoff.

Toney has been a vital engine for the Hurricanes' top-ranked scoring offense, which averages 47.6 points per game. Through eight appearances this season, he has recorded 73 receptions, 1,027 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns, ranking among the top three players nationally across those major statistical categories.

Losing the Heisman candidate would present a significant challenge for Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. In the event that Toney cannot suit up, the team is expected to rely more heavily on the running game and alternative pass-catchers such as Cooper Barkate, Daylyn Upshaw, Vandrevius Jacobs, Somourian Wingo, and Vance Spafford.

For Notre Dame, the potential absence of Miami's primary weapon could offer relief to a secondary anchored by All-American cornerback Leonard Moore. The Fighting Irish enter the weekend at No. 11 with a single loss, needing a victory to solidify their standing in the College Football Playoff race after narrowly missing out last season.

The stakes are similarly massive for Miami as the top-ranked team visits South Bend for the first time since 2017. As Toney attempts to overcome his ankle injury to help guide the Hurricanes, both teams prepare for a contest carrying major postseason implications.
