Miami Heat Face Indiana Pacers in NBA Cup Opener at Kaseya Center
The Miami Heat host the injury-plagued Indiana Pacers on Friday night as both teams look to build momentum early in the season.
The Miami Heat will host the Indiana Pacers on Friday evening for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. The matchup marks an early-season test and an NBA Cup opener for both organizations, with the Heat entering at a 1-4 record and the Pacers standing at 2-3.
Miami recently snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 129-117 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on the road. During that win, forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and center Bam Adebayo each recorded 24 points, while Antetokounmpo also grabbed 18 rebounds. The Heat shot 53 percent from the field and dominated the interior by scoring 70 points in the paint.
Meanwhile, the Pacers arrive in Miami dealing with severe roster depletion due to a mounting injury report. Forward Obi Toppin was recently ruled out of Friday's contest due to lower back soreness, becoming the sixth Indiana player unavailable for the game. Toppin has averaged 15.2 points per game off the bench this season.
Toppin joins a lengthy list of sidelined Indiana contributors that includes star point guard Tyrese Haliburton due to a hamstring strain, center Ivica Zubac with an ankle sprain, veteran guard T.J. McConnell with a hamstring strain, guard Ben Sheppard with a meniscus tear, and forward Johnny Furphy with an ACL tear. With only eight standard contract players remaining, the team has activated all three of its two-way contract players.
Despite the absences, the Pacers continue to rely heavily on forward Pascal Siakam. Siakam recorded a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in Indiana's 114-109 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. Guard Andrew Nembhard added 18 points and 14 assists in that contest, though he enters Friday listed as probable with neck soreness alongside Aaron Nesmith, who is managing a hamstring issue.
The two teams met three times during the previous season series, with the Pacers winning two of those three games, though Miami protected its home court in their previous encounter at the Kaseya Center. Entering Friday's contest, analytics models and sportsbooks list the Heat as clear favorites, reflecting the significant personnel challenges facing the visiting Indiana roster.
As the Heat look to build upon their recent offensive rhythm and climb back toward a .500 record, the short-handed Pacers aim to lean on their defensive discipline and Siakam's production to pull off an upset on the road.
