Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini secured an impressive victory at the Paris Masters on Wednesday, defeating local favorite Ugo Humbert 7-6, 7-5 after one hour and forty-six minutes of play. With this strong performance, Berrettini advances to the next round of the final ATP 1000 tournament of the season, where he will face Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.

Berrettini's progression in Paris follows earlier victories, including a win over Brandon Nakashima, as the Italian strives to regain the elite form that pushed him to world No. 6 at the beginning of 2022. Currently ranked No. 43 in the ATP rankings and hindered by injuries in recent times, Berrettini reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Vienna earlier this year. He holds ten career titles, though he has not lifted a trophy since 2024.

His upcoming opponent, Carlos Alcaraz, advanced to the round of sixteen after overcoming a slow start against American Alex Michelsen, ultimately prevailing 7-6, 6-3. Alcaraz enters the matchup carrying a six-match winning streak. Historically, the upcoming encounter will mark the fifth meeting between Alcaraz and Berrettini on the professional tour, with their last match taking place in the round of sixteen at Wimbledon 2023.

The tournament in Paris has already delivered major upsets and high drama across the draw. Alexander Zverev's tenure as the new men's world No. 1 got off to a difficult start on Wednesday when he suffered a straight-sets defeat, 7-6, 6-2, to Italy's Lorenzo Musetti in the second round. Zverev admitted his performance was poor, describing it as one of his worst outings in recent months on the rapid court.

Following Zverev out of the tournament was seven-time champion Novak Djokovic, who fell to Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. The defeat extinguished Djokovic's remaining mathematical chances of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin, leaving only two spots open for the November event. Djokovic struggled to maintain control after leading in the second set, ultimately dropping his serve and losing the match on a missed backhand.

Other notable results from the second round included Daniil Medvedev's straight-sets loss to Peruvian player Ignacio Buse, and Frances Tiafoe's heartbreaking defeat to Frenchman Quentin Halys after squandering four match points. Meanwhile, Arthur Fils secured his qualification for the ATP Finals following Tiafoe's exit, becoming the first Frenchman to reach the year-end championship since Gael Monfils in 2016.

The highly anticipated match between Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berrettini is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, during the evening session, starting no earlier than 7:00 PM local time. The winner will move one step closer to claiming the final Masters 1000 title of the tennis season.
