Carlos Alcaraz Advances to Paris Masters Round of Sixteen After Defeating Alex Michelsen
The Spanish tennis star overcame a tough challenge from the American player to secure a straight-sets victory at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the round of sixteen at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris on Wednesday by defeating American player Alex Michelsen with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3. Competing at the Paris La Defense Arena, the Spanish tennis star had to maintain high concentration against a resilient opponent who tested him throughout the match.
The first set proved particularly competitive, featuring a tight tiebreak where Alcaraz rallied from an early deficit to take the opening frame 7-4. In the second set, the third-ranked Spaniard raised his intensity and secured a crucial break, ultimately closing out the match in straight sets to move forward in the tournament.
Alcaraz enters the Paris tournament following a successful run at the ATP 500 in Vienna, where he captured his twenty-eighth professional title by defeating Alex de Minaur in the final. His recent success follows a recovery period of over four months away from the court due to a right wrist injury.
Reflecting on his recovery process during a press conference, Alcaraz admitted to having moments of self-doubt regarding his physical condition. "There were moments when I was sure that I was going to return to my best level and others in which I doubted myself, I am not going to lie, moments in which I doubted if I would be able to hit my forehand at my maximum level, at one hundred percent, if I was going to be physically top again," he stated.
Michelsen, the world number 35, offered a tough test in their second career meeting, having previously faced the Spaniard at the Tokyo tournament. Ahead of the match, the 22-year-old American noted the quicker court conditions in Paris compared to previous events, stating that the lower bounce and fast serves suited his style of play.
The tournament has already seen major upsets, including the elimination of top-ranked Alexander Zverev by Lorenzo Musetti and seven-time champion Novak Djokovic falling to Rinky Hijikata. With several top seeds exiting early, Alcaraz has emerged as a primary favorite to claim the title and secure points ahead of the upcoming ATP Finals.
The Rolex Paris Masters runs through Sunday, November 8, offering crucial ranking points and a substantial prize pool for the competitors. Alcaraz will continue his campaign in the French capital as he prepares for the final stretch of the men's tennis season.
