Mary Berry's Queen of Desserts Featured on The Great British Baking Show

Contestant Yannis exits the popular baking competition after attempting Mary Berry's classic recipe during Dessert Week.

The Great British Baking Show returned for its fifth episode with a highly competitive Dessert Week, featuring a staggered start for the first time in the show's history. Hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding announced that the eight remaining contestants would tackle self-saucing puddings for the Signature challenge, while judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson evaluated the bakes.

Because the self-saucing desserts are best served hot, bakers were given staggered start times so the judges could taste them as intended. Connie, a 63-year-old NHS hospital discharge lead from London, impressed the most with her chocolate orange fondants and earned a coveted Hollywood handshake.

Things did not go as smoothly for Yannis, a 28-year-old pediatric doctor from London. Attempting to make apple strudel puddings inspired by his childhood in Austria, he made his portions so large that they failed to bake properly. Yannis finished near the bottom during both the Signature and Technical challenges.

Although the Showstopper round went well across the board with retro dessert carts, Yannis could not turn his fortunes around. His dessert cart featured a sticky toffee pudding, a Black Forest gateau, and Mary Berry's Queen of Desserts.

Ultimately, the doctor was eliminated from the competition, becoming the fifth contestant to leave the tent. Reflecting on his departure, Yannis expressed gratitude for the experience.

"Thank you, it has been a pleasure. I grew up watching this programme and being here for five weeks is surreal," Yannis said before exiting the tent. "I will be very proud of that and it's been absolutely wonderful."
