Reigning African champions Mamelodi Sundowns experienced a stunning early exit from the CAF Champions League on Friday night, held to a 1-1 draw by Angola's Wiliete SC in the second leg of the second preliminary round at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane. Having played out a scoreless stalemate in the opening leg in Angola, the aggregate score finished 1-1, allowing the visiting side to advance to the group stage on the away goals rule.

The match began promisingly for the home side under the Friday night lights. Forward Tashreeq Matthews broke the deadlock after just 11 minutes, capitalizing on a deflected shot that left the Wiliete goalkeeper helpless. The strike provided an early cushion and settled the nerves of the home supporters, as manager Miguel Cardoso's squad controlled possession for much of the opening period.

Despite dominating portions of the first half, the South African giants failed to capitalize on their chances. Brayan León squandered a pair of golden opportunities before the interval to put the contest out of reach. The lack of clinical finishing ultimately haunted the hosts as the game progressed.

Just four minutes into the second half, Wiliete stunned the defending champions when Mabululu capitalized on a defensive miscue. A wayward back pass from Cassius Mailula left Marcelo Allende flat-footed, allowing the veteran Angolan striker to break through on a breakaway and effortlessly beat returning goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The away goal shifted the momentum entirely to the visitors. Although León briefly had the ball in the back of the net shortly after, the effort was quickly waved off due to a foul during the buildup. Cardoso responded by introducing tactical substitutes, including Antonio van Wyk, Thapelo Morena, and Siyanda Ndlovu, but the changes failed to spark a winning goal.

The final whistle confirmed a monumental upset, denying the Brazilians a spot in the group stage for the first time since 2015. The elimination delivers a heavy blow to the club's ambitions this season, especially coming off domestic success in the Premiership table, the MTN8, and the FIFA Africa-Asian-Pacific-Cup.

With this result, Orlando Pirates remain South Africa's sole representative in the CAF Champions League following their commanding 5-0 aggregate victory over the African Stars. Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Federation's updated tournament regulations mean that eliminated Champions League teams like Sundowns will no longer transition into the CAF Confederation Cup, officially ending their continental campaign for the season.
