Orlando Pirates advanced to the CAF Champions League group stages on Friday night after securing a commanding 4-0 victory over Namibian side African Stars in the second leg of their second preliminary round matchup. The result completed a 5-0 aggregate triumph for the Soweto giants following their narrow 1-0 win in the opening leg in Botswana.

Playing under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the Buccaneers controlled the pace of the match early on. Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring in the 17th minute by converting a close-range shot from three yards out after latching onto a pass over the top from Masilela. The home side maintained relentless pressure throughout the first half, frustrating the visiting team and keeping goalkeeper Sipho Chaine largely untested.

Just before the break, Evidence Makgopa doubled the lead for Orlando Pirates. Masilela once again provided the assist, setting up Makgopa, who displayed composure to slot the ball home from close range. The goal sent the Buccaneers into halftime with a comfortable three-goal lead on aggregate.

Ouaddou utilized the second half to manage his squad, making a triple substitution that introduced Mpho Padime, Kabelo Kgositsile, and Deon Hotto. The tactical adjustments paid off quickly when substitute Mpho Padime extended the lead immediately after the restart, scoring his first goal in the competition by finishing off a well-executed team move.

With 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Makgopa capped off his stellar performance by netting his second goal of the night. The brace bolstered Makgopa's ambitions to secure the role of first-choice striker under Ouaddou ahead of teammates Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane.

While Orlando Pirates celebrated their progression, the broader landscape of South African football on the continental stage presented mixed results. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shocking elimination from the CAF Champions League after failing to overcome Wiliete on aggregate. Meanwhile, in the CAF Confederation Cup, Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out by Zambia's Red Arrows following a penalty shootout.

Following the exit of other local clubs, Orlando Pirates now stand as South Africa's sole representatives remaining in the prestigious CAF Champions League competition as the tournament moves into the group stage phase.
