Mamelodi Sundowns Edge Marumo Gallants 1-0 to Advance in Carling Knockout Cup
Siyanda Ndlovu's first-half goal secured the Pretoria club's place in the tournament's quarterfinals following a heavily rotated lineup.
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a spot in the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinals after defeating Marumo Gallants 1-0 on Tuesday night at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The narrow victory provided a vital rebound for the South African powerhouse following their surprising early exit from the CAF Champions League against Wiliete SC the previous week. Facing a struggling Gallants squad, the home side did just enough to protect an early advantage and keep their domestic cup ambitions on track.
Winger Siyanda Ndlovu scored the match's only goal in the 20th minute, capping off a swift offensive sequence. Forward Iqraam Rayners used his pace down the right flank to beat a defender before finding Ndlovu near the edge of the penalty area. Despite rapidly running out of room near the end line, Ndlovu lashed a powerful strike that ricocheted into the net off the crossbar. The decisive effort earned Ndlovu Man of the Match honors and marked his third goal of the season across all competitions.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso made extensive adjustments to his starting eleven following the continental setback, retaining only center-back Malibongwe Khoza from the squad that started against Wiliete SC. The sweeping rotations featured the return of goalkeeper Ricardo Goss in place of Ronwen Williams, while Arthur Sales and Thabo Cele each earned their first starts of the campaign. Experienced defender Mothobi Mvala made his first start since November 2024, wearing the captain's armband and organizing the backline alongside Khoza.
Sundowns controlled the tempo during the opening period, asserting command over the ball with roughly 70 percent possession. The home team repeatedly utilized the flanks, where Rayners consistently pressured the Gallants defense with probing runs. Although Sundowns created numerous opportunities to extend their advantage, they were unable to produce an insurance goal, leaving the game within reach for the visitors throughout the contest.
Marumo Gallants showed greater determination following the opening strike, seeking an equalizer through an aggressive pressing approach. Midfielder Moremi Seketso proved to be a persistent threat against the Sundowns defense, supported by Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and Thato Pheeha. However, Gallants failed to convert their chances, with Goss delivering a critical save just before the one-hour mark to preserve the clean sheet. The defeat extended Gallants' winless streak across all competitions this season to nine matches, leaving head coach Ronnie Kanalelo still pursuing his first victory.
Cardoso acted decisively at halftime by making two substitutions, replacing Cele and Fawaaz Basadien with regular starters Aubrey Modiba and Marcelo Allende. Later in the second half, substitute Nuno Santos narrowly missed doubling the lead in the 64th minute after combining with Rayners, driving his shot just wide of the goal post. Winger Monnapule Saleng also made his season debut for Sundowns, entering the contest with seven minutes remaining as the team managed the closing stages to secure the victory.
The result keeps Sundowns in contention for domestic silverware during a busy stretch of the campaign, which will see them face Marumo Gallants once again this Saturday in Betway Premiership action. In concurrent club news, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies learned their fate for the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League, drawing Egypt's FC Masar, Morocco's FUS Rabat, and Cameroon's Lekie Football Filles in Group A, set to kick off on November 1.
