Major Weekend Highway Closures Impact Bay Area Travelers
Caltrans crews initiate significant weekend road closures on Interstate 80 and State Route 37 for critical repaving and storm preparation work.
Bay Area drivers face major travel disruptions this weekend as highway crews initiate two significant road closures beginning Friday night. The construction projects impact both San Francisco and the North Bay, leading transportation officials to strongly advise motorists to seek alternative routes or utilize public transit.
The first major project involves a full weekend closure of westbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco, stretching from 5th Street to 15th Street. According to Caltrans, this closure begins Friday at 11 p.m. and remains in effect until Monday at 6 a.m. Crews are working to finalize concrete repaving on the freeway deck, following a similar project completed on the eastbound lanes earlier in the year. Caltrans strongly advises drivers to avoid using the Bay Bridge to enter the city during this period.
Simultaneously, a second major infrastructure project will shut down both eastbound and westbound lanes of State Route 37 from Mare Island in Vallejo to Sears Point. This 55-hour closure runs from Friday at 10 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m. Transportation crews will remove the center median and divert all traffic flow onto the westbound lanes.
The urgent work on State Route 37 is designed to prepare the flood-prone corridor for incoming El Niño weather conditions, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding. Caltrans explained that portions of the roadway will be raised by three feet to help reduce flooding risks on the vital commuter route, which has flooded repeatedly over the years.
Motorists attempting to navigate around the Highway 37 closure face significant delays and must follow established detours. Transportation officials recommend that eastbound travelers take State Route 121, while westbound commuters are advised to use State Route 29 to connect to State Route 12 and State Route 121, which routes traffic past the Sonoma Raceway.
With multiple highway disruptions expected to heavily impact regional traffic, transportation authorities reiterate that using public transit whenever possible is the best way to navigate around the weekend construction work.
