Luka Doncic makes NBA history as Lakers hold off Raptors 131-125
The Los Angeles superstar posted a historic stat line and strong defensive effort to help survive a late Toronto surge.
The Los Angeles Lakers secured a 131-125 victory against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, driven by a historic performance from star guard Luka Dončić. Dončić finished the contest with 45 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, five steals, and one block, helping the Lakers improve their regular-season record to 5-2.
Entering the final period with a comfortable 22-point lead, Los Angeles nearly relinquished the advantage as Toronto mounted a fierce comeback, outscoring the Lakers 43-27 in the fourth quarter. Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged that his decision to rest key starters significantly contributed to the near-collapse, forcing him to reintroduce his main players to secure the win.
Dončić delivered on both ends of the floor throughout the night, setting multiple historical milestones in the process. He became the first player in the play-by-play era to record at least 20 points, five rebounds, five three-pointers, and five steals in a single half, while also becoming the first point guard in league history to notch five steals and five three-pointers in a half.
Furthermore, the six-time All-Star established a new benchmark as the first player in NBA history to achieve at least 45 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and five made three-pointers in a single game. Dončić shot 12-for-23 from the field, including 8-for-12 from beyond the arc, and converted all 13 of his free throw attempts across 35 minutes of play.
Beyond his offensive output, Dončić drew praise for his defensive activity, which included three charges drawn against opposing players. Lakers center Walker Kessler noted that Dončić possesses a high basketball IQ and consistently positions himself correctly on defense, helping shift the narrative surrounding his two-way play.
Reflecting on his defensive strides, Dončić remarked after the game that he has taken a clear step forward this season. "Obviously, I'm not the best defender in the NBA, but I think this year I really took a step forward," Dončić said. "People are going to talk what they want to talk about me, but I know, and my team knows, that I think I'm better this year."
Head coach JJ Redick also praised his star guard's sustained brilliance, comparing his current stretch of play to a natural phenomenon. "It feels like a supernova, but it also feels normal," Redick stated after the victory.
With the win secured, the Lakers face a quick turnaround as they prepare to host the Miami Heat on Monday night. It remains uncertain whether Dončić will feature in the second leg of the back-to-back following his heavy workload against Toronto.
