The ongoing financial crisis at German department store chain Galeria has triggered further economic fallout, forcing the logistics company Fiege to file for self-administered insolvency at its facility in Unna, Germany. The unfolding situation places the job security of approximately 1,250 workers at risk as the logistics provider navigates the repercussions of its primary client's restructuring.

The Fiege group, a family-owned business with a history spanning more than 150 years, operates 131 locations across 15 countries with a global workforce of around 21,000 employees. Company representatives emphasized that the insolvency proceedings apply exclusively to the specific operating company managing the Unna logistics center, while all other domestic and international Fiege locations remain unaffected by the filing.

The Unna facility operates entirely on behalf of Galeria, serving as the central warehouse that coordinates inventory and transportation for all 83 department store branches throughout Germany. The deep operational reliance on a single major retail partner left the logistics hub vulnerable when Galeria filed for insolvency.

To stabilize the immediate operational outlook, Fiege and Galeria have successfully negotiated a continuation agreement. This arrangement secures the ongoing logistics services and facility operations through December 31, 2026, providing a temporary operational bridge while both organizations assess long-term viability.

Company management addressed the workforce and local works councils regarding the restructuring measures. Employee wages and salaries during the preliminary insolvency phase will be covered by state-provided insolvency benefits disbursed through the Federal Employment Agency.

Looking ahead, Fiege leadership stated that the primary objective is to safeguard the Unna location and protect as many of the 1,250 jobs as possible. In addition to maintaining dialogue with Galeria, the logistics firm is actively pitching prospective new clients to diversify the facility's portfolio. However, executives acknowledged that acquiring new business under current macroeconomic conditions will prove challenging and require considerable time.
