Liverpool and Sunderland Secure EFL Cup Quarter-Final Spots
Dramatic penalty shootouts and rapid first-half scoring flurries determined the latest round of tournament action.
Liverpool and Sunderland secured their places in the EFL Cup quarter-finals following high-stakes encounters that produced dramatic shootouts, bizarre on-field moments, and rapid scoring runs across the competition's latest round. At Anfield on Wednesday evening, Liverpool edged Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, while Sunderland stunned Premier League side Brentford to advance deeper into the knockout tournament.
The clash on Merseyside featured high drama late in the first half after Chelsea had opened the scoring courtesy of a penalty kick from Morgan Rogers. Parity was restored when Liverpool received a penalty of their own in the 43rd minute, awarded after defender Fofana was penalized for handling the ball inside the Chelsea penalty area.
The incident immediately prompted an unusual scene that captivated onlookers. Chelsea midfielder Jordan Henderson, who joined the club in the summer after more than a decade at Anfield, instinctively raised his arm alongside former Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk to appeal for a penalty against his own team. The 36-year-old midfielder previously captained Liverpool through a silverware-laden era, winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup before leaving Merseyside in 2023.
Cody Gakpo stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way to level the match at 1-1 heading into the interval. After the second half finished without further goals, the round was decided by a tense penalty shootout. Despite Henderson successfully converting his attempt from the spot for the visitors, Liverpool clinched the shootout 6-5 to eliminate Chelsea from the competition.
In another decisive cup fixture, Sunderland booked their ticket to the quarter-finals by pulling off an upset against Brentford. The Black Cats took firm control of the match courtesy of an electric first-half surge, scoring three goals in a span of just 13 minutes. Tymur Tutierov, Chemsdine Talbi, and Malick Fofana all struck in quick succession to place Brentford in a deep deficit before the break.
Brentford attempted to mount a response, pulling a goal back through Callum Wilson three minutes before halftime and later seeing Igor Thiago find the net in stoppage time. However, the late push fell short in the 3-2 defeat. Brentford manager Keith Andrews defended making eight squad changes from their previous league match, acknowledging that defensive breakdowns in both penalty boxes proved insurmountable during the defeat.
"We were very ambitious in this competition to go as far as we could," Andrews reflected after the elimination. "We approached it in a very diligent way. We can't concede goals like that in a short space of time, defend like that and expect a good outcome. It was a crazy game, but we have to look at ourselves, how we conceded those goals. You can't describe those 12 minutes of madness." Following the cup exit, Brentford turns its focus back to Premier League action, where they are scheduled to host Oliver Glasner's Nottingham Forest.
