Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta Warns Against Complacency Ahead of Fleetwood Town Cup Tie

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has issued a stern warning to his squad ahead of their EFL Cup fourth-round clash against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. As the Gunners prepare to travel to Highbury Stadium, the Spanish coach emphasized that his team must maintain peak performance levels to avoid an upset against the lower-league opposition.

The match marks the first time Arsenal and Fleetwood have met in any competitive fixture. While Arsenal enters the game on a strong run of form, having extended their unbeaten streak to five matches across all competitions, Arteta remains wary of the risks inherent in knockout football. He noted that the gap between teams can diminish rapidly if the favorites fail to match their opponent's intensity.

"Our reputation, our pride, everything is in play," Arteta stated regarding the upcoming fixture. "Every time you play a football match, and especially against a team in a different division, respect the game, respect every opponent because they deserve to do that, and then try to win and try to play a bit better than them." He added that the team's habits and basics must be "through the roof" to secure a victory.

Arteta is expected to rotate his squad for the midweek encounter as Arsenal continues to compete on multiple fronts. The manager highlighted the importance of managing player workloads, particularly with a significant Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield scheduled for the following Sunday. Potential starters for the cup tie include younger talents such as Max Dowman and contributors like Viktor Gyokeres, who has earned praise for his recent performances despite not finding the back of the net.

Fleetwood Town, currently competing in League Two, is making its first-ever appearance in the fourth round of the competition. Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor acknowledged the magnitude of the event for his club, noting that the stadium has sold out for the first time in over a decade. While Lawlor expressed deep respect for the reigning Premier League champions, he urged his players to embrace the challenge without fear.

Arsenal’s history in the EFL Cup against fourth-tier opponents has been largely successful, with the club progressing from eight of their previous nine such ties. The only exception occurred during the 2012-13 season when they were eliminated by Bradford City. As the Gunners aim to move one step closer to the trophy they narrowly missed out on last season, Arteta remains focused on the immediate task at hand.

The Arsenal manager stopped short of confirming his final starting lineup, stating that he would evaluate the physical condition of his players before finalizing his plans. With the team aiming to balance rotation with the discipline required to maintain their momentum, the focus remains on upholding the standards expected of the club regardless of the opponent's league standing.
