Linda Noskova Defeats Marta Kostyuk in WTA Finals Opener at Indian Wells

Linda Noskova opened her campaign at the season-ending WTA Finals on Sunday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Marta Kostyuk in Indian Wells, California. Competing in their first career WTA Finals appearances, Noskova needed 86 minutes to defeat her Ukrainian opponent and claim an early advantage in Group One play.

Kostyuk entered the tournament as an alternate after reigning champion and world number one Elena Rybakina withdrew on Saturday due to a viral illness. Struggling to find her rhythm early in the match, Kostyuk dropped her opening service game and committed multiple unforced errors. Noskova capitalized on the mistakes, establishing a steady lead and capturing the first set in just over 30 minutes.

The second set proved more competitive as Kostyuk improved her first-serve percentage and won her initial service games to pressure the Czech player. However, Noskova broke for a 4-2 lead and maintained her composure to close out the match. "I knew that I had a difficult match ahead of me. Marta is a great player. I was ready to fight and I am very happy that it went so well," Noskova said after the victory.

The win improved Noskova's head-to-head record against Kostyuk to 3-1, with all of their meetings taking place during the current season. Noskova previously defeated Kostyuk at the US Open and Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Czech player holds a career-high 41 wins this season and secured her fifth victory over a top-10 opponent on Sunday.

Following her opening win, Noskova's upcoming round-robin matches will pit her against American competitors Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Gauff and Pegula bring their own extensive rivalry to the tournament, having split 10 career meetings across the professional circuit.

The 2026 WTA Finals take place at the hardcourt facilities in Indian Wells. The tournament was relocated to California following regional security concerns and military actions in the Middle East earlier in the year.
