Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula Face Off in WTA Finals Opener
American tennis stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula meet in Indian Wells following Elena Rybakina's withdrawal from the tournament.
American tennis stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are set to clash on Sunday in their opening match of the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California. The high-profile encounter between the two compatriots highlights the start of Group 1 play at the prestigious year-end tournament.
The tournament's landscape shifted significantly just before play began when world number one and defending champion Elena Rybakina was forced to withdraw due to a viral illness. Rybakina released a statement through the WTA noting that her body was not physically ready to compete, which leaves Gauff as the only former WTA Finals champion remaining in the singles draw following her 2024 victory in Riyadh.
Gauff and Pegula enter the matchup separated by a mere three points in the race for the year-end number four ranking, with Gauff holding 5,763 points to Pegula's 5,760. Their head-to-head career record stands tied at five wins apiece, marking this as their fourth consecutive year meeting at the WTA Finals, a streak matched historically by only a few elite pairings.
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, an eight-time WTA Finals champion, offered tactical insights ahead of Gauff's campaign. Navratilova praised Gauff's defensive capabilities while urging the 22-year-old American to follow her approach shots to the net more frequently to shorten points and utilize her reach and volleys.
Gauff's 2026 season has featured strong performances at major events, including capturing the title at the Cincinnati Open, reaching WTA 1000 finals in Miami and Rome, and advancing to the semi-finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open. Meanwhile, the 32-year-old Pegula comes into the event with 50 match wins this year and titles in Charleston and Dubai.
The opening day of Group 1 action will also feature a rematch between Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic and Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who entered the singles draw as an alternate following Rybakina's withdrawal. Noskova currently leads their head-to-head series 2-1 after victories earlier this summer.
With the top two players from each group advancing to the semi-finals, the round-robin stage carries significant weight for the remaining competitors. The tournament winner could claim up to $3.37 million and 1,500 ranking points if they navigate the week undefeated.
