Liam Neeson Sets Box Office Low with The Mongoose
The new action thriller recorded the worst domestic wide-release debut of the actor's career.
Liam Neeson's latest action thriller, The Mongoose, has marked an all-time career low at the box office, earning a three-day total of $480,000 over Halloween weekend. Directed by Mark Vanselow and written by Thompson Evans, the movie debuted at No. 18 on the domestic chart across 1,014 theaters. Featuring a cast that includes Marisa Tomei, Michael Chiklis, and Ving Rhames, the film follows a veteran who seeks help from his former Special Forces unit after being framed for a murder.
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie achieved a per-screen average of $473, marking the 177th worst per-screen average debut of all time. It also secured the worst domestic debut in history for a wide-release movie starring Neeson. Industry data shows that no other film featuring the actor in a lead or supporting role on more than 600 screens has previously grossed less than $500,000 during its opening weekend, even without adjusting for inflation.
The Mongoose has faced overwhelmingly negative reviews, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 29%. With a reported production budget of $20 million, the film's estimated break-even point could reach $50 million, a financial benchmark it is unlikely to achieve through theatrical ticket sales alone. Box office projections suggest the film will likely finish its run grossing less than $5 million.
While the movie struggles in theaters, it is beginning its rollout on video-on-demand and streaming platforms, launching on Prime Video in select international territories such as Australia and Canada. It remains to be seen how the title will perform outside of traditional theatrical box office markets as it awaits further audience reviews.
In other entertainment developments, actress Portia de Rossi has secured her first feature film role in over a decade. Best known for her work in television series such as Arrested Development and Ally McBeal, de Rossi is set to appear in The Reception, an ensemble comedy directed by Trudie Styler.
The upcoming film takes place at a wedding in a grand Scottish estate where the bride and groom mysteriously vanish, leaving the guests to proceed with the celebrations. The project features a cast that includes Dominic West, John Cleese, and Jeff Daniels, though a release date has not yet been announced.
