King Felipe VI of Spain held a formal meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, at the Zarzuela Palace this past Thursday. The encounter took place during the Ukrainian leader's visit to Madrid, where he traveled to participate in the 30th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government.

During his time in the Spanish capital, President Zelensky engaged in a series of high-level diplomatic meetings. In addition to his audience with King Felipe VI, the Ukrainian president met with the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, to discuss ongoing bilateral relations and the security situation in Eastern Europe.

Addressing the participants of the Ibero-American community, President Zelensky emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine constitutes a global issue. He warned that allowing Russia to seize Ukrainian territory would set a dangerous precedent for the international order and the principles established by the United Nations Charter. He urged world leaders to remain steadfast in their support for Kyiv as the country continues to face massive military attacks.

The Ukrainian president specifically requested that the international community speak out against the loss of civilian life caused by Russian strikes. He cited recent tragedies, including the bombing of a humanitarian aid distribution center in Zaporizhzhia, as evidence of the need for urgent global attention. Zelensky argued that the continuation of the war rests on the decisions made by the Russian leadership.

Beyond diplomatic support, Zelensky sought practical cooperation regarding Ukraine's energy infrastructure. He highlighted the need for stronger air defense systems and assistance in rebuilding the power grid following repeated Russian strikes on energy facilities. He suggested that companies in Spain and across Latin America could play a vital role in providing the necessary equipment and technical support to restore essential services.

The visit also facilitated other bilateral discussions, including a meeting between Zelensky and the President of Portugal, António José Seguro. During that session, the two leaders explored the potential for joint weapons production to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities. Furthermore, the Portuguese delegation reaffirmed its commitment to a just and durable peace that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While the international summit focused on geopolitical stability, the Spanish Royal Household has also been privately preparing for the future of the monarchy. Reports indicate that Princess Leonor has been increasingly involved in the daily operations of the Crown. Following her return to Madrid, the Princess has spent time observing the King's work, including the preparation of diplomatic audiences and the analysis of international affairs, as part of her ongoing training to eventually assume the role of Head of State.
