Spanish Lawmaker José María Figaredo Faces Scrutiny Over Parliamentary Conduct

The Vox deputy has drawn criticism for both a recent public campaign speech and a past legislative inquiry based on a satirical social media post.

José María Figaredo, a deputy for the Spanish political party Vox, has recently faced public and political scrutiny regarding his communication style and the vetting of information used in his parliamentary duties. The lawmaker, who serves as the party's economic spokesperson, has been the subject of critical commentary following a recent street rally and a previous incident involving a legislative inquiry based on a hoax.

During a recent outdoor campaign event, Figaredo addressed a crowd without a jacket and holding a microphone, urging attendees to engage in proselytizing to help others understand the importance of the current political climate. He called for "blind faith in victory" and encouraged supporters to maintain high morale and enthusiasm. The speech, which was shared widely, drew comparisons from critics to the delivery style of a subway preacher, with some observers questioning the effectiveness of his rhetorical approach.

Beyond his recent public speaking, Figaredo has also been involved in a notable legislative error that occurred in July 2024. Alongside fellow Vox deputies Patricia Rueda and Ricardo Chamorro, Figaredo submitted an official inquiry to the Spanish government regarding the alleged presence of piranhas in the Sella River. The inquiry was based on a satirical post created by a social media influencer known as El Pruvianu.

The parliamentary request formally asked the government for data on the population of red-bellied piranhas in the river and inquired about potential control plans. After the error was identified, the deputies withdrew the initial request. However, they subsequently filed a follow-up question asking the government how it planned to address the "social alarm" allegedly caused by the false report and how it intended to protect the tourism appeal of the Sella International Descent competition.

The Spanish government issued a response on October 7, 2024, clarifying that the hoax had minimal reach and that no administrative body had received any reports of piranhas in the river. The government rejected the claim that the incident had caused significant social alarm or harmed the tourism sector, noting that the sporting event took place without any issues. In its response, the government advised lawmakers and the public to verify the accuracy of information before treating it as fact.

This incident has been highlighted by critics as an example of how misinformation can be mistakenly accepted by public figures when it aligns with certain biases. The influencer behind the original post recently revisited the event, noting how a joke intended for entertainment was treated as a serious matter within the halls of the national legislature. Other public figures have also been noted for falling for similar satirical content from the same source in the past.

As a prominent figure within his party, Figaredo remains a central point of discussion regarding the intersection of political communication and the verification of digital information. While supporters may view his recent street rally as an attempt to energize the base, opponents continue to point to his legislative record as evidence of a need for more rigorous fact-checking in political discourse.
