King Felipe and Queen Letizia to Attend Funeral for Train Crash Victims
The memorial service will take place on Tuesday at the Cathedral of Toledo following the railway tragedy near Urda.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia will attend a memorial mass on Tuesday, November 10, at 7:00 PM in the Cathedral of Toledo to honor the victims of the recent railway accident near Urda, according to announcements from the Zarzuela Palace and the Archdiocese of Toledo. The tragic collision, which occurred on October 28 on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line, resulted in the deaths of 69 people.
The Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Cerro Chaves, advanced the service by two days due to scheduling reasons. The archbishop will preside over the ceremony alongside auxiliary bishop Francisco César García Magán. The mass will also be attended by the president of the Spanish Bishops' Conference, Luis Javier Argüello, along with bishops from Cuenca, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real, Albacete, and other regions across the country.
The royal couple's presence marks a continuation of their support for the grieving families and survivors. The day after the disaster, King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the University Hospital of Toledo to meet with injured individuals and their families. During that visit, the King emphasized the need to uncover the exact causes of the catastrophe, stating that authorities must study measures to prevent such events from happening again.
In addition to their hospital visit, the monarchs stopped by the Buen Pastor Diocesan House of Exercises in Toledo, which served as a refuge for relatives waiting for news during the immediate aftermath of the crash. Political figures, including Popular Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Castilla-La Mancha regional president Emiliano García-Page, have also confirmed their attendance at the upcoming funeral.
Meanwhile, uncertainty remains regarding whether Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will attend the service. This follows statements from the executive branch leaving decisions about state-level commemorations up to the families, especially after complaints regarding a lack of direct consent following previous tragedies.
The upcoming memorial falls shortly before the official launch of the campaign for the general elections scheduled for November 29, and follows the recent resignation of Transport Minister Óscar Puente. As the nation prepares to mourn, local religious and civic leaders continue to provide spiritual and psychological support to those affected by the disaster.
