Ignacio Relaño has emerged as a prominent voice following the catastrophic railway accident on October 28, 2026, near Urda in the Spanish province of Toledo. Relaño was a passenger in the third car of an AVE high-speed train traveling the Madrid-Sevilla route when it collided with several cars of an Iryo convoy. The severe crash resulted in dozens of fatalities and numerous injuries, leaving the transportation network and the public in deep shock.

At the time of the impact, Relaño was working on his laptop. He recalled experiencing a sudden, violent deceleration that threw him forward and caused minor scratches on his face. He described the terrifying sequence of events as a massive noise followed by rolling sensations and a strong smell of iron. "The experience was a tremendous blow," Relaño stated, noting that he felt a sensation like "an abyss coming toward you of something very heavy." He admitted that he feared for his life as the train continued through successive impacts before finally coming to a halt.

While Relaño managed to escape the wreckage largely uninjured and walked out under his own power, the scene outside his car was devastating. He recounted witnessing trapped passengers, severe injuries, and what he described as an infernal nightmare with lifeless bodies. Due to the chaos and fears of a potential fire or electrical failure, survivors initially sought safety away from the danger zone and attempted to assist one another while waiting for professional help to arrive.

In the minutes leading up to the disaster, Relaño noted that the train had come to an unexpected stop lasting about 15 to 20 minutes. According to his account, the engineer informed passengers that the halt was due to congestion on the tracks. After the journey resumed, the collision occurred roughly 10 to 15 minutes later. Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and the underlying causes of the tragedy.

Beyond recounting the terror inside the carriages, Relaño voiced profound indignation over the state of the Spanish railway system and directed harsh criticism toward national officials. Pointing to prior incidents and technical reports, he argued that another major accident was anticipated. He publicly demanded the resignation of Transport Minister Óscar Puente, as well as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, citing a lack of accountability, tact, and basic decency in the wake of the disaster.

As investigations continue into how the collision occurred, testimonies from survivors like Relaño provide crucial insight into the immediate human impact of the catastrophe. While physically escaping with minor scratches, Relaño noted that the emotional toll and the lingering questions regarding railway safety remain heavily on the minds of passengers and the public across the country.
