Kimi Antonelli Wins Formula 1 World Championship at Age 20 in Mexico
The Mercedes driver finished third at the Mexico City Grand Prix to secure his first world title and become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured the 2026 Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship on Sunday after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix. At just 20 years and 68 days old, the Italian driver clinched his maiden world title with four races to spare, breaking the previous record set by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years old when he won his first championship in 2010.
The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton crossing the line in second place. Antonelli entered the weekend needing only two points to seal the championship mathematically, but his steady drive to the final podium spot cemented an extraordinary campaign that now includes ten victories and 16 podium finishes in his second season in the top tier of motorsport.
"Thank you so much! We did it, we did it. Thank you so much!" Antonelli celebrated over the team radio immediately following the race, visibly emotional after securing the championship for Mercedes.
Antonelli's victory also ends a 73-year championship drought for Italy. The country had not produced a Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari secured back-to-back titles in 1952 and 1953. The young driver's meteoric rise saw him skip the FIA Formula 3 championship entirely, moving straight from Formula 4 and Formula 2 directly into a coveted seat with Mercedes to replace Hamilton.
The Mexican Grand Prix itself featured intense racing, strategic battles, and multiple safety car interventions. A first-lap incident involving Ferrari teammates Hamilton and Charles Leclerc allowed Verstappen to capitalize and move into second. Later in the race, an accident involving Arvid Lindblad on lap 59 brought out the safety car, bunching up the field before a clean restart that allowed Verstappen to maintain his lead.
Following Sunday's results, Antonelli leads the drivers' standings with 380 points. Max Verstappen moved into second place with 261 points, followed closely by Lewis Hamilton with 259 points and George Russell with 250 points.
The Formula 1 season will resume next week with the São Paulo Grand Prix at the Autódromo de Interlagos in Brazil, running from November 6 through November 8, where teams will continue competing for the constructors' championship and the remaining positions in the drivers' standings.
