The 2026 Formula 1 season reaches a pivotal moment on Sunday, November 1, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the Mexican Grand Prix. All eyes in the motorsport world are focused on Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who stands on the verge of making history by potentially clinching the world drivers' championship in just his first year at the highest level of the sport. The Italian driver enters the event with a chance to shatter the record for the youngest world champion, a milestone previously set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010.

Antonelli needs to secure at least a ninth-place finish in Mexico to guarantee the championship regardless of what his competitors achieve. If he finishes in tenth place, he would need his teammate George Russell to avoid winning the race. Should Antonelli finish eleventh or lower, or fail to finish the race entirely, he can still claim the title provided that neither Russell nor Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton take the victory at the Mexico City circuit.

The starting grid features Lewis Hamilton on pole position after a surprising qualifying performance in his Ferrari, securing his first pole with the team and his first since 2023. George Russell qualified second, just 0.009 seconds behind his compatriot, keeping himself mathematically alive in the title fight. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc starts third for Ferrari, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli begins the race from the fifth position.

The weekend has not been without its major setbacks for several teams. Both Aston Martin cars suffered an early double retirement during the race due to abnormal water pressure levels in their power units, forcing Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll to park their vehicles. Alonso had already experienced a frustrating qualifying session after a Honda engine failure dropped him out during the initial elimination round.

In the midfield and back of the grid, local favorite Sergio Pérez competes at home in front of passionate crowds at the Foro Sol, aiming to secure his first official points of the championship season. Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz starts sixteenth in his Williams, facing a challenging afternoon as the team tests developments focused on future seasons.

Track conditions at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez present significant strategic challenges, with ambient temperatures exceeding 23 degrees Celsius and track temperatures reaching nearly 50 degrees Celsius. Teams navigated high tyre degradation and the difficulties of overtaking in dirty air, creating intense battles throughout the field as the 71-lap race unfolded.
