KBO League Concludes Historic Season Marked by Record Attendance and Veteran Milestones
The 2026 regular season shattered attendance records and witnessed numerous historic achievements by veteran players across South Korea's top professional baseball league.
The 2026 KBO League regular season concluded with unprecedented milestones, highlighted by a historic attendance turnout and remarkable individual achievements from veteran players. According to league data, cumulative attendance surpassed 12.77 million spectators, eclipsing the previous single-season record set last year. For the first time in league history, all eight participating teams surpassed the one million home attendance mark, propelled by the Samsung Lions, who established a new single-season franchise home attendance record with 1,717,050 fans.
Alongside the booming attendance, the season featured numerous historic milestones achieved by veteran stars. Samsung Lions catcher Kang Min-ho became the first player in KBO history to appear in 2,500 career games, standing as the only catcher among the top ten players in career appearances. Hanwha Eagles pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin reached 1,500 career strikeouts in a record-low 246 games at 39 years and 13 days old, while also surpassing 200 combined wins in South Korea and the United States. Samsung's Choi Hyung-woo set a new standard by simultaneously achieving 4,500 total bases and 1,000 extra-base hits.
Additional records fell across the league as LG Twins pitcher Kim Jin-sung claimed sole possession of first place in career holds with 178. LG outfielder Park Hae-min became the first player in league history to record 20 stolen bases in 13 consecutive seasons while also reaching the 500 stolen base milestone. KT Wiz pitcher U Kyu-min became the third pitcher in league history to pitch in 900 career games, SSG Landers slugger Choi Jeong extended his streak of 20-home-run seasons to 11, and KT's Kim Hyun-soo recorded 100 hits for the 17th consecutive season.
The offensive side also saw historic performances in the hit column, as Lotte Giants player Reyes and KT Wiz player Choi Won-jun became the first players in league history to simultaneously surpass 200 hits in a single season. Reyes tallied 211 hits to break his own single-season hit record and secure his third consecutive batting title, while Choi finished with 208 hits. Furthermore, SSG Landers player Park Sung-han set a new opening-game streak record by hitting safely in 22 consecutive games to begin the season, breaking a 44-year-old record set by Kim Yong-hee in 1982.
On the broadcast front, MBCSportsPlus secured the top spot in KBO League regular-season broadcasting viewership ratings for the second consecutive year. Registering a nationwide household average rating of 1.328% according to Nielsen Korea, the network outperformed its competitors. A game between LG and KIA on October 12 drew a record 3.677% nationwide household rating, marking the highest broadcast rating in KBO League history. That matchup served as a de facto third-place playoff, concluding with KIA defeating LG 4-2 behind a decisive two-run home run by Kim Do-young in the eighth inning.
Meanwhile, the developmental side of professional baseball continues ahead of the upcoming international competitions as the 2026 Ulsan-KBO Fall League is scheduled to run from October 15 through October 31 at the Ulsan Munsu Baseball Stadium and the Gijang-KBO Baseball Center. Entering its third year, the tournament features 12 domestic and international teams designed to provide practical playing opportunities for rising prospects. The tournament includes eight domestic squads alongside four international teams, featuring the debut of the Long Beach Coast from America's Pioneer Baseball League.
In roster development news, the KIA Tigers recently announced the acquisition of seven developmental players, including 24-year-old infielder Choi Byung-yong. Having previously been selected in the 20th round of the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Diego Padres, Choi played in the minor leagues before spending time in the American independent leagues and going unselected in the 2027 KBO Draft. KIA officials stated that they signed Choi and six other prospects based on their underlying potential and physical attributes to bolster the organization's future depth.
