Kansas City Chiefs Tackle Josh Simmons Sidelined After Clash With Head Coach

Kansas City placed offensive lineman Josh Simmons on injured reserve following a reported disagreement with head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Josh Simmons faces an uncertain future with the franchise after a verbal clash with head coach Andy Reid during a team meeting led to his departure and subsequent placement on injured reserve. The incident, which leaked ahead of Sunday Night Football, adds tension to a tumultuous stretch for the team's 2025 first-round draft pick.

According to reports from ESPN's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport, the confrontation occurred last Wednesday when Reid instructed Simmons to take his feet off a chair in the offensive meeting room. Simmons responded that his back and hips were aching and that he needed to sit that way. When Reid told him to seek treatment from athletic trainers if he was hurting, the exchange escalated and disrupted the session.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes ultimately intervened to back Reid, telling Simmons to follow the head coach's instruction and go get treated. Sources stated that an irritated Simmons left the room but remained in the facility. Later that day, Simmons apologized to Reid and team leadership, acknowledging that he could have handled the situation better.

The following day, the Chiefs placed Simmons on injured reserve due to a bulging, herniated disk in his lower back. The designation means he will miss at least the next four games, starting with Sunday's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, and cannot return before November 22 when Kansas City hosts the Arizona Cardinals. Simmons has already missed significant playing time, having appeared in only eight of a possible 22 games since entering the league.

The leaked report of the locker room confrontation prompted widespread reaction from analysts and fans. Media commentators suggested the franchise may be growing frustrated with a combination of lingering health issues and behavioral friction. KCTV5 sports anchor Mark Poulose wrote on social media that the leak indicated the organization was tired of the player's actions, while NBC Sports' Kyle Dvorchak noted that Simmons was increasingly becoming a problem in the locker room.

Addressing reporters on Friday, Reid attempted to downplay the situation regarding Simmons' extended absence and health status. "I hope this isn't asked me every week. I mean, this is just — put this to rest, and he'll take care of that. And you guys, I mean, this isn't that big of a story. Let's focus on the football team, the guys playing," Reid said.

In the wake of the injury reserve placement, undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson continues to start at left tackle for the Chiefs. While Simmons' rookie contract includes substantial guaranteed money that complicates any potential release, media and fan speculation regarding his long-term future in Kansas City continues to mount as the team navigates the remainder of the season.
