As anticipation builds for Saturday's sold-out Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium, Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mfundo Vilakazi has opened up about the tactical advice he received from head coach Fernando Da Cruz regarding on-field showboating. Speaking to reporters at a press conference on Thursday, the 20-year-old playmaker discussed how the French tactician has influenced his approach to the game while preserving his characteristic style.

Vilakazi, affectionately known as "Obrigado" in the streets of Soweto, has enjoyed a breakout role at Chiefs under Da Cruz this season. Known for his rapid pace, dynamic movement, and fearless flair, the young winger initially captured national attention as a 15-year-old standout at the Phillys Games in Tembisa. His viral displays of traditional kasi flava eventually led to his recruitment by the Amakhosi senior team in January 2024.

However, Vilakazi's flamboyant style has occasionally drawn criticism during his professional career. Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding showboating in South African football, Vilakazi revealed that Da Cruz never outright banned his expressive displays, but rather urged him to apply them judiciously.

"When the coach arrived, he told me that he knows my style of play, but sometimes it's not necessary for me to be showboating," Vilakazi explained to the media. "He didn't say I must stop doing it, but what I told myself is that the team comes first. I can't be showboating when my team is not getting the results. If we start getting the results, I can start to do that, but sometimes you don't plan the showboating; it just happens by default."

The tactical adjustment reflects a maturing mindset for the South Africa youth international, who helped Kaizer Chiefs lift the Nedbank Cup trophy to end a 10-year title drought. In the Betway Premiership, Chiefs currently sit fifth on the standings with 14 points from eight matches, trailing cross-town rivals Orlando Pirates by seven points and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by eight points.

Despite external criticism regarding Kaizer Chiefs' inconsistent form earlier in the season, opposing camps have recognized the team's structural progress. Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou recently praised Da Cruz's work at Naturena, noting that despite outside noise, the squad avoids defeats and maintains an interesting tactical game model.

Both giants enter Saturday afternoon's encounter carrying strong momentum following midweek 3-0 victories. While Chiefs defeated TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup, Pirates secured a win against Milford FC. For Vilakazi and his teammates, a victory at FNB Stadium would elevate them to fourth place in the premiership standings, setting the stage for a fiercely contested battle where team discipline and individual brilliance will both take center stage.
