Julius Randle Shines with 33 Points in Nets' Season-Opening Loss to Hornets
Despite a stellar debut by the newly acquired forward, the Brooklyn Nets fell 110-103 to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.
The Brooklyn Nets began their 60th season with high hopes and a vibrant home crowd at the Barclays Center on Wednesday night, but ultimately fell short against the Charlotte Hornets, losing 110-103. Despite staying within striking distance for the majority of the game, Brooklyn struggled to generate consistent offensive production outside of their top two stars.
Forward Julius Randle, acquired in an offseason trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves, put on a commanding performance in his team debut. Randle led all scorers with 33 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the field and converting 8-of-11 free throw attempts. He also added eight rebounds, seven assists, one block, and three three-pointers in 37 minutes of action.
Headlining Brooklyn's new look alongside Michael Porter Jr., Randle carried the scoring load early, notching 15 points by halftime and acting as the team's primary playmaker. Porter overcame a slow start to finish with 26 points, five made three-pointers, and seven rebounds, while also contributing defensively with three steals.
Outside of Randle and Porter, however, the Nets found little offensive rhythm. The team encountered defensive lapses that allowed the Hornets to secure 20 second-chance points, while Charlotte guard Grayson Allen added 21 points off the bench. Brooklyn's young point guards also experienced growing pains in the competitive season opener.
For Charlotte, the matchup represented a fresh chapter following major offseason roster changes, which included trading LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges. Despite being shorthanded without injured players like Kon Knueppel and Coby White, the Hornets managed to execute down the stretch and secure the 110-103 victory to start their campaign at 1-0.
Randle's strong performance offers an encouraging sign for a Brooklyn squad looking to bounce back from a difficult 20-62 finish last season. As head coach Jordi Fernández prepares his team for an upcoming matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday, the dynamic between Randle and Porter is expected to anchor the Nets' offense moving forward.
