Chaney Johnson Provides Bench Spark in Nets' Heartbreaking Overtime Loss
The forward posted a season-high 15 points as Brooklyn fell to 0-4 against Boston.
Brooklyn Nets forward Chaney Johnson delivered an energetic spark off the bench Tuesday night, scoring a season-high 15 points before fouling out in a crushing 125-124 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics at TD Garden. Despite Johnson's standout production, the Nets were unable to secure their first victory of the young campaign, dropping to 0-4 after Boston star Jayson Tatum drained a game-winning jumper as the final buzzer sounded.
Johnson was instrumental in establishing Brooklyn's early control, posting 12 of his 15 points during the first half. His second-quarter putback basket stretched the Nets' lead to 59-53, helping Brooklyn build a 61-56 edge by halftime. The forward struck again in the fourth quarter, converting a clutch layup following a Michael Porter Jr. three-pointer to extend Brooklyn's advantage to 107-104 with minutes remaining in regulation.
The performance marked a notable step forward for Johnson, who entered the contest having scored fewer points combined across Brooklyn's first three games than the 15 he produced in Boston. Along with reserve center Mo Wagner, who contributed 15 points and two steals, Johnson helped energize a second unit that had struggled to generate consistent offense early in the year.
Tuesday's outing followed another promising performance from Johnson earlier in the season during a 125-121 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In that matchup, Johnson was a rare bright spot among the reserves, tallying 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists while displaying relentless energy and mobility on both ends of the floor. As other bench options and recent draft picks struggled for floor time, Johnson solidified his standing in the rotation.
The game in Boston proved intensely physical, presenting significant foul challenges for Brooklyn. Officials strictly enforced rules, handing Julius Randle a non-unsportsmanlike technical foul for flopping in the second quarter and issuing another to Boston rookie Baylor Scheierman. The Nets ultimately committed 30 fouls, which led to Tatum attempting a career-high 22 free throws and sent both Johnson and Randle to the bench with six fouls. Brooklyn also endured the loss of guard Egor Dëmin, who left with a right leg contusion and did not return.
Brooklyn still pushed the reigning powerhouse to the limit behind 27 points and 12 rebounds from Porter and 24 points from Randle. Rookie Mikel Brown Jr. scored 16 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, hitting a game-tying three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in regulation and pushing Brooklyn ahead 124-119 in extra time. However, a rushed shot by Brown with 6.1 seconds remaining handed Boston possession, setting up Tatum's 40-point masterpiece and buzzer-beater.
While the loss extended Brooklyn's winless start, Johnson's development provides an encouraging sign for head coach adjustments moving forward. The Nets will search for their breakthrough win on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, when they host the Detroit Pistons in their Emirates NBA Cup East Group A opener.
