Jio Platforms Launches Record-Breaking IPO in India

The multi-billion-dollar share sale reached full subscription within hours of opening, boosting the Indian rupee to a six-week high.

Jio Platforms launched its initial public offering of up to 270 million fresh shares, raising approximately Rs 30,213 crore and becoming the largest public share sale in India. Backed by parent company Reliance Industries, the offering achieved full subscription within the first two hours of bidding on October 21, surpassing previous market benchmarks.

The 100 percent fresh equity issue was heavily driven by qualified institutional buyers, securing strong participation from major global investors. While Reliance Industries holds a 66.4 percent stake in Jio Platforms and will retain control after the listing, neither the parent company nor other existing shareholders sold any existing shares during the offering.

Jio Platforms plans to allocate up to Rs 27,500 crore of the net proceeds to repay borrowings at its wholly owned subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. According to financial analysts at Moody's Ratings, reducing debt at the operating company will lower associated servicing costs and preserve vital funding flexibility as the conglomerate continues heavy capital investments in digital infrastructure.

Managing Director Akash Ambani emphasized the company's broader technological scope during interviews surrounding the launch, stating, "There is no either-or at Jio: the network is our technology." Beyond traditional telecommunications services supporting over 500 million customers, the firm is aggressively expanding into artificial intelligence, cloud-native radio access networks, and deep-tech innovations.

The massive public offering has also exerted a notable impact on the broader financial market. Driven by foreign currency inflows from the IPO alongside intervention by the Reserve Bank of India, the Indian rupee surged to a six-week high of 94.38 against the US dollar. Forex analysts noted that the stronger currency could help ease imported inflation, though ongoing pressures from rising global crude oil prices and weak domestic markets remain a challenge.

Market participants are closely monitoring how the raised capital will be deployed to support upcoming technological advancements, including JioAICloud, JioPC, and the integration of advanced artificial intelligence models across customer applications. The subscription period is scheduled to close on October 23, with listing targets anticipated shortly thereafter.
