Jérôme Kym Pulls Off Stunning Upset Over Ben Shelton at Swiss Indoors
World number 222 Jérôme Kym secured the biggest win of his career by defeating top-seeded Ben Shelton in Basel.
Jérôme Kym delivered one of the most astonishing upsets of the tennis season late Thursday night, defeating world number four and top-seeded Ben Shelton at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Competing on a wild card in his home tournament, the 23-year-old Swiss player triumphed 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 after two hours and twenty minutes of intense play, finishing the match past 1:30 a.m. in front of an electrified crowd.
The victory marks the first time Kym has ever defeated an opponent from the top 30 of the ATP rankings, making him the lowest-ranked player to defeat a top-10 member this season. Entering the match as the heavy underdog against an American star who reached the U.S. Open final in September and claimed four titles earlier in the year, Kym seized control early by taking the first set.
The second set proved intensely competitive, with Shelton asserting himself in the tiebreak to level the match. In the deciding third set, Kym surged ahead to a commanding 5-2 lead with a double break, putting him on the cusp of a straight-set victory. However, severe nerves gripped the young Swiss player, allowing Shelton to claw back and win four consecutive games to take a 5-6 advantage.
Despite the sudden collapse and the pressure of serving to stay in the match, Kym managed to compose himself. He forced a deciding tiebreak by winning a crucial game to love, and then dominated the final breaker to seal the historic triumph. Reflecting on his miraculous escape from defeat, Kym admitted, "To be honest, I don’t know how I survived that at 5-6."
The atmosphere inside the venue played a major role in pushing the local favorite across the finish line. Despite the late hour, the remaining fans created a loud and vibrant environment that fueled Kym's determination. "It feels surreal," Kym said regarding the victory. "During the tiebreak, I told myself: With every point you win, you shout out loud, pump your fist, and show him that you’re absolutely determined to win."
For Shelton, the defeat serves as a stumbling block in an otherwise stellar season that includes a runner-up finish at Flushing Meadows and titles in Dallas, Munich, Stuttgart, and Montreal. The American top seed had survived a grueling first-round battle against compatriot Aleksandar Kovacevic, but ultimately could not find an answer against the inspired Swiss wild card.
With the win, Kym is projected to climb approximately sixty spots in the world rankings and advances to the second quarterfinal of his career on the main circuit. He is scheduled to face the Czech Republic's Jiri Lehecka on Friday evening in the quarterfinals, continuing his unexpected and inspiring run in Basel.
