Canadiens Captain Nick Suzuki Sidelined 2 to 4 Weeks
Montreal's star center will miss time with an upper-body injury, bringing an end to his 546-game ironman streak.
The Montreal Canadiens announced Thursday that team captain Nick Suzuki will be sidelined for two to four weeks due to an upper-body injury. The announcement marks a significant blow to the club, bringing a definitive halt to Suzuki's remarkable ironman streak of 546 consecutive regular-season games played since his NHL debut.
The injury occurred late in Tuesday's matchup against the San Jose Sharks, which ended in a 4-3 overtime loss for Montreal. With just over five minutes remaining in the third period, the 27-year-old center was struck on the left hand by a shot from opposing defenseman Michael Kesselring. Despite the impact, Suzuki managed to finish his shift and played just over 21 minutes in the contest, contributing a goal and an assist.
According to the team's communications staff, Suzuki did not speak to the media after Tuesday's game because he was immediately receiving medical treatment. The upcoming absence will be the very first time the forward has missed a game in his professional career, having played every single contest since entering the league in the 2019-20 season.
Prior to its conclusion, Suzuki's consecutive-games streak stood as the second-longest active run in the NHL, trailing only Colorado defenseman Brent Burns, whose streak sits at 1,017 games. Furthermore, Suzuki's streak ranked as the 20th-longest in the history of the league.
The loss of their captain comes at a difficult juncture for the Canadiens, who currently sit sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 4-3-2 record. Suzuki had started the season in strong form, recording five goals and seven assists for a total of 12 points. While some sources note he has played nine games, another indicates he has accumulated those 12 points across seven games.
Suzuki is coming off a stellar 2025-26 campaign in which he registered 29 goals and a career-best 101 points, alongside 19 points in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Last season also saw him capture the Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward and earn a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
In response to the injury, the Canadiens recalled forward Owen Beck from the American Hockey League's Laval Rocket on Thursday morning. Beck had been reassigned to the AHL just a day prior, scoring a goal in Laval's 5-1 victory over the Syracuse Crunch before getting the call back up to the NHL club.
Montreal is preparing to embark on a four-game road trip against Western Conference opponents. The team is scheduled to kick off this stretch of games by playing in Chicago on Friday night.
