Italian Military Helicopter Crash in Bosnia Leaves Four Dead and Eleven Injured
The CH-47 Chinook was carrying fifteen people during a routine training mission when it went down in the Brcko region.
An Italian military helicopter crashed on Thursday afternoon in northeastern Bosnia-Herzegovina, resulting in the deaths of four service members and leaving eleven others injured. The aircraft, a CH-47 Chinook assigned to the European Union's Operation Althea, went down in the Brcko region during what authorities described as a routine training mission.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed the casualty figures late Thursday evening, noting that fifteen people were aboard the aircraft. The four individuals who lost their lives include two members of the Italian Army and two representatives from the Voluntary Military Corps of the Italian Red Cross. The deceased army personnel were identified as Sergeant Simone Ruggia and Sergeant Claudio Marchesi, both stationed at the Army Aviation Command in Viterbo. The Red Cross victims were Lieutenant Franco Adriano Zecchillo and Sergeant Laura Procacci.
Eleven other individuals sustained injuries in the accident and were promptly transported to medical facilities in Brcko for treatment. Minister Crosetto stated that none of the surviving personnel are currently considered to be in life-threatening condition. The Italian Ministry of Defense immediately dispatched a medical team to Bosnia-Herzegovina to provide additional support and care for the wounded.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. The European Union Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, known as EUFOR, announced that a comprehensive and thorough inquiry is underway to establish the sequence of events. Italian Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina Sarah Castellani reported that the incident apparently occurred during the takeoff phase from the Brcko airport. While the investigation continues, authorities are examining various possibilities, including a potential strike against high-voltage power lines, although weather conditions in the area at the time appeared clear.
Leaders from across Italy expressed profound sorrow and condolences following the tragedy. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared her grief on social media, offering thoughts and solidarity to the victims, their families, and all personnel engaged in international peacekeeping efforts. President Sergio Mattarella also conveyed his condolences to the Chief of the Defense Staff, while Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized that the government will provide all necessary assistance to the families and the injured.
EUFOR has operated in Bosnia-Herzegovina since 2004, taking over peacekeeping duties from NATO forces that were deployed following the 1992-1995 conflict. The mission currently comprises hundreds of military personnel from 24 European nations. Officials from EUFOR confirmed that no civilian property was damaged and no civilians were injured during Thursday's incident, while urging the public to rely solely on official channels for verified information regarding the ongoing investigation.
