Israeli Forces Kill Hamas Militant Linked to Shani Louk Abduction
The Israel Defense Forces announced the elimination of Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim al-Zabaq during an airstrike in northern Gaza.
Israeli forces have killed a Hamas militant who took part in the abduction and murder of 22-year-old German-Israeli citizen Shani Louk during the October 7, 2023, attacks. The Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet security agency stated that Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim al-Zabaq was targeted and killed in an airstrike in the Jabalia area of the northern Gaza Strip.
According to military officials, al-Zabaq was a member of Hamas’s military wing and had infiltrated southern Israel on October 7, 2023, participating in the assault on the Nova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im. During the attacks, militants killed at least 364 people at the festival and abducted numerous hostages into Gaza, including Louk, whose motionless body was filmed being transported in a pickup truck.
With al-Zabaq's death, the IDF reports that four of the five militants identified in the cell that paraded Louk's body through Gaza have now been killed, while a fifth suspect, Mustafa Ala Khatib, remains in Israeli custody. Earlier military operations accounted for the deaths of Mustafa Shahin, Basel Saleh, and Atiya Daur.
Shani Louk’s remains were eventually recovered by Israeli troops from a tunnel in Jabalia in May 2024 and returned to Israel for burial. Her father, Nissim Louk, expressed support for the military action in an interview, stating that those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.
In a joint statement, the IDF and Shin Bet noted that al-Zabaq had recently been working to advance attacks against Israeli civilians and troops while attempting to restore Hamas's military capabilities, actions the military described as a violation of ceasefire agreements.
In addition to al-Zabaq's elimination, Israeli operations in recent days have targeted other figures within the militant group. A separate strike in Gaza City killed Akram Bassam Shaaban Yassin, whom the military identified as a senior official in Hamas's General Security Mechanism responsible for protecting leadership and compiling intelligence.
The ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip continue as Israeli forces maintain positions under terms established following earlier conflict phases, targeting individuals linked to the October 7 atrocities and efforts to rebuild military infrastructure.
