Indian Para-Athlete Neeraj Yadav Dies by Suicide at 42 Amid Doping Ban
The Asian Para Games gold medalist had been facing acute emotional strain after losing his titles and career rewards.
Neeraj Yadav, an accomplished Indian para-athlete and multi-time Asian Para Games gold medalist, died by suicide in Delhi at the age of 42. Authorities reported that Yadav was declared dead upon arrival at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital early Wednesday after ingesting poison. National sports figures and law enforcement confirmed that the competitor had been enduring severe psychological distress following a four-year doping suspension and personal difficulties.
According to Delhi Police, the sequence of events began on Tuesday when a female friend met Yadav in Sonipat, Haryana. During their meeting, she informed him that she could no longer maintain contact with him. Yadav subsequently drove her to the Maujpur neighborhood in northeast Delhi in his Scorpio. Around 9:00 p.m., the woman grew concerned, returned toward Gate No. 1 of the Maujpur Metro Station, and discovered Yadav lying unconscious on the road beside his vehicle. She immediately took him to the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death shortly after midnight.
Investigators at the Jafrabad police station launched official inquiry proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. While authorities are examining his interpersonal relationships leading up to the incident, his body was transferred for a postmortem examination to confirm the specific toxic substance consumed. Police records show that Yadav operated an online sports venture, the Anshneer Sports Academy, based out of Sonipat, and is survived by his wife and their three-year-old daughter.
Indian national para-athletics head coach S Satyanarayana confirmed the loss, noting he had maintained regular communication with the athlete throughout his professional challenges. "Neeraj has died by suicide. It is very unfortunate that such a thing has happened. I had a very close relationship with him," Satyanarayana said. The coach explained that Yadav had fallen into a deep depression caused by several compounding pressures, including the loss of his sporting honors, financial distress, and strained domestic ties.
The primary origin of Yadav's professional crisis was a four-year suspension imposed after he tested positive for a prohibited substance following the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China. The disciplinary sanction led to the revocation of the two gold medals he secured at those games in the javelin and discus throw events. Furthermore, the ban officially sidelined him from participating in the 2026 Asian Para Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The suspension dealt a devastating blow to Yadav's livelihood and long-term security. Satyanarayana pointed out that the Asian Paralympic Committee's ruling stripped the athlete of more than 30 million rupees in state cash rewards, as well as an anticipated Class I government job in the state of Uttar Pradesh that had been slated to transform his family's financial standing. A few months before his death, Yadav had approached the coach about entering selection trials, but was told the active suspension made his participation impossible.
Yadav had previously overcome severe physical setbacks to emerge as an elite international competitor. Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven, he initially took up wheelchair tennis before transitioning into track and field. He found his competitive footing in the F55 classification, a seated sports category designed for field competitors in the shot put, discus, and javelin throw.
His athletic pinnacle came at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he won the gold medal in the men's F55 javelin throw with a record-setting mark of 29.84 meters. Although he had also earned considerable prize earnings from his Jakarta victory, sports officials expressed profound sorrow that the former champion felt pushed to such an extreme outcome rather than transitioning toward coaching within the evolving para-sports system.
