India Restricts Zimbabwe to 197 in Opening ODI Clash
Spanning a disciplined bowling display at the BCA Stadium, India restricted Zimbabwe to 197 runs before closing out the first innings.
The India women's national cricket team delivered a disciplined bowling performance to restrict the Zimbabwe women's national cricket team to 197 all out in 49.5 overs during the opening match of the three-match ODI series at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara.
After winning the toss, Zimbabwe opted to bat first on a red soil pitch. Stand-in captain Nomvelo Sibanda led the side in place of regular skipper Josephine Nkomo, who sat out due to a minor niggle. The visitors faced early trouble when Kranti Gaud struck in her second over to remove Loryn Phiri for just one run.
Modester Mupachikwa and Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano steadied the innings with a 43-run partnership, helping navigate the initial powerplay restrictions. However, once the fielding restrictions were lifted, the scoring slowed under mounting dot-ball pressure, leading to quick dismissals of both batters.
Beloved Biza anchored the innings for Zimbabwe with a fighting half-century. Biza crafted a well-made 62 off 92 deliveries and formed useful lower-order partnerships with Nyasha Gwanzura, Chiedza Dhururu, and Michelle Mavunga to push the visitors close to the 200-run mark.
Reflecting on her performance after scoring a half-century, Beloved Biza noted that she wanted to play straight, build her innings, and rotate the strike. She added that her message to the team for the second innings was simply about staying present and enjoying the game of cricket.
Despite Biza's resistance, India's spin attack dismantled the middle order. Sree Charani led the bowling figures with an impressive 4/23 in her spell, while Kranti Gaud claimed 3/42. Deepti Sharma wrapped up the innings by bowling Tendai Makusha for 10, finishing with a pair of wickets, while Shafali Verma chipped in with a wicket as well.
India will enter the second essay pleased with their bowling effort, despite noting three dropped catches and a couple of missed run-out opportunities in the field. The hosts now require 198 runs to secure a victory and take an early lead in the ODI series following their dominant 3-0 sweep in the preceding T20I matches.
