Haley Stevens Endorses Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate Race
The surprise endorsement comes after a bitter feud with Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed over Israel and outside campaign ads.
Democratic Representative Haley Stevens stunned party officials on Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's closely watched U.S. Senate race, just two days before the election. Stevens, who lost a fiercely contested primary to progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed earlier this year, made the announcement after appearing with Rogers at a Detroit church. The development exacerbates deep internal divisions within the Democratic Party and threatens to influence key voting blocs in one of the most critical midterm contests for control of Congress.
The rupture followed days of escalating tensions between Stevens and El-Sayed regarding the nominee's positions on Israel and outside campaign advertisements. Senior Democrats, including Representative Debbie Dingell and Representative James Clyburn, had spent days attempting to organize a joint appearance to project party unity ahead of Tuesday's vote. However, plans unraveled after Stevens publicly demanded that El-Sayed condemn an ad by an independent left-wing group that linked U.S. financial support for Israel to rising domestic grocery prices.
Standing alongside Rogers, Stevens told reporters that she was uninvited from participating in El-Sayed's campaign events and that her decision to cross party lines was definitive. "When it really comes down to it, this is how I'm casting my ballot," she stated. The move drew swift backlash from party leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who denounced the endorsement as a "despicable betrayal," while state party officials confirmed her expulsion from the Michigan Democratic Party.
The fallout also deeply affected Stevens' own legislative office, prompting her longtime chief of staff and multiple other aides to resign in protest. Meanwhile, El-Sayed brushed aside the controversy during a separate campaign stop, emphasizing his focus on policy issues rather than political infighting. El-Sayed's campaign had previously urged Stevens to stay away from upcoming events, noting that the primary concluded months ago and pointing out the heavy outside spending from pro-Israel groups, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, that had previously supported Stevens.
The public rift has placed Jewish and Black voters in Michigan in a difficult position, as both demographics represent crucial parts of the state's Democratic coalition. El-Sayed, who could become the first Muslim U.S. senator if elected, has faced persistent scrutiny from some Jewish voters over his past rhetoric on Israel, as well as Islamophobic attacks from political opponents. Conversely, Rogers has seized on the intraparty turmoil to court Jewish voters who previously supported Stevens during the primary election.
Republicans welcomed the endorsement, with former President Donald Trump praising the move on social media. As both campaigns make their final push across Wayne and Oakland counties, national Democratic leaders continue to rally behind El-Sayed, insisting that the party remains focused on securing a congressional majority and turning out voters before polls close on Tuesday.
