Golden State Warriors Overcome 25-Point Deficit to Defeat Lakers
Steph Curry and Brandin Podziemski led a historic comeback as the Warriors secured a 112-95 victory in NBA Cup action.
The Golden State Warriors pulled off a historic comeback on Friday night, erasing a 25-point first-half deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 in an NBA Cup matchup at the Chase Center. With the win, the Warriors improved to 3-3 on the season and notched their third consecutive victory after starting the year with three straight losses.
Los Angeles dominated the opening period, surging to a 40-15 lead early in the second quarter. Luka Doncic led the charge for the Lakers, scoring 21 of his game-high 37 points in the first quarter alone. However, Golden State completely turned the momentum around before halftime, limiting Doncic to just three points in the second quarter and holding the Lakers to only four points in the final four minutes of the half.
The Warriors achieved a feat not seen in the NBA since 1954, becoming the first team to trail by 23 or more points in the first quarter and fight back to tie the game by halftime. Brandin Podziemski capped off the stunning second-quarter surge by sinking a three-pointer in the final six seconds, bringing the score even at 53-53 heading into the break.
Stephen Curry orchestrated the offense with a team-high 31 points, which included eight three-pointers and a sequence where he shook Doncic with a crossover before hitting a perimeter shot. Podziemski provided essential support with a season-high 21 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals, one block, and four three-pointers, scoring 14 of his points after halftime.
Podziemski played a critical role during a key stretch when the Warriors transformed a nine-point deficit into a 17-point lead, drawing three offensive fouls from the Lakers and adding 10 points. His defensive positioning and willingness to take charges proved vital in protecting the basket alongside the rotation of Curry, Al Horford, Draymond Green, and De'Anthony Melton.
The Warriors also received strong contributions from their bench, which outscored the Lakers' reserves 50-7. De'Anthony Melton added 16 points and two steals while shooting efficiently from deep, and Georges Niang chipped in three three-pointers in 19 minutes of play.
The victory helped the Warriors overcome an uncharacteristic outing from rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who finished with six points, one rebound, and five turnovers. With the impressive win, Golden State sits at the top of Group C in the NBA Cup standings, using the large point differential as a potential tiebreaker for the quarterfinals.
