Gold Prices Surge Over 2 Percent Following Unexpected US-Iran Peace Talks
Precious metals climbed as falling oil prices and shifting economic expectations eased pressure on the Federal Reserve.
Gold and silver prices surged more than 2% on Monday as unexpected progress in US-Iran peace talks sent crude oil prices downward. The diplomatic developments reduced immediate fears of energy inflation, sparking a rebound in precious metals following a difficult month for the market.
According to reports, Iranian negotiators recently met with Qatari mediators, and a revised peace proposal is currently circulating. Tehran indicated that its seven-step plan could potentially be implemented within two days, which might lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifts its blockade of Iranian ports. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi described the ongoing consultations as very intensive.
Despite the diplomatic optimism, hurdles remain. Former proposals faced resistance from Washington, and regional sources suggest that renewed military actions are still possible. Nevertheless, the immediate market reaction was heavily influenced by the drop in oil prices, which fell more than six percent following the news.
Lower energy costs reduce broader inflation concerns, which in turn could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates. Because investors sacrifice less interest income by holding non-yielding assets when expected rates are lower, precious metals become significantly more attractive.
While gold saw a strong recovery, other assets experienced different pressures. Bitcoin struggled during the same period, dipping into the $76,000 range following previous security incidents and significant outflows from exchange-traded funds. Market analysts note that many corporate and ETF buyers entered the market at higher averages, placing additional strain on the cryptocurrency.
Investors are closely monitoring several upcoming developments that could alter market directions. Key areas to watch include the ongoing negotiations concerning Iran, upcoming US midterm elections, and the release of the latest US jobs report, which could reinforce Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations and impact the recent recovery of precious metals.
