Precious Metals Plunge as Global Markets Face Sharp Correction

Gold and silver rates fell significantly across international and domestic markets following aggressive equity sell-offs and a hawkish Federal Reserve stance.

Precious metal prices experienced a severe downturn across international and domestic markets, driven by a combination of broad equity market liquidations, a stronger US dollar, and an increasingly hawkish outlook from the Federal Reserve. Spot gold dropped below the psychologically significant $4,000 threshold to finish the week near $3,928 an ounce, marking its lowest settlement in at least twelve months. Meanwhile, silver suffered even steeper losses, plunging past 11-month lows to trade near $50.15 an ounce in global spot markets.

The sharp downward movement in bullion was largely catalyzed by a scramble for cash amid a wider stock market rout. Major equity indices dropped sharply, led by substantial declines in prominent technology stocks such as chipmaker Intel, which fell nearly 30 percent in a single session. Investors who had borrowed against their portfolios were forced to liquidate liquid assets, including gold and silver, to meet margin requirements. This unusual correlation caused safe-haven assets to fall alongside equities rather than acting as a hedge.

Monetary policy expectations further exacerbated the downward pressure. The Federal Open Market Committee decided to maintain the federal funds rate target range at 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent, but the announcement carried a distinctly hawkish tone. Two committee members voted for an immediate rate increase, and subsequent data pointed to persistent inflation and robust economic growth, keeping expectations alive for additional tightening before the end of the year.

Domestic markets in countries such as India and Bangladesh mirrored these international declines. Retail and futures markets adjusted their tariffs downward to reflect lower global bullion costs. In Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Jewellers' Association lowered the price of 22-carat gold and reduced silver rates across all grades, citing falling pure metal costs in the international market. Similarly, Multi Commodity Exchange futures in India saw benchmark gold and silver contracts tumble, offering some localized relief to physical buyers ahead of upcoming festive seasons.

Silver experienced a much more violent correction than gold due to its dual nature as both a precious and an industrial metal. Concerns regarding global industrial growth and tighter monetary conditions weighed heavily on industrial demand expectations. Consequently, the gold-silver ratio widened to roughly 76, reflecting a period where silver significantly underperformed its yellow counterpart and dropped more than 50 percent from its January record highs.

Market participants are now closely monitoring upcoming economic catalysts, including employment reports, political elections, and the next Federal Reserve policy meeting in December. While physical demand during traditional buying periods provides some domestic support in key consumer markets, traders and investors await clear signals from equities and central bank communications to determine whether the broader liquidation cycle has concluded.
