GIFT Nifty Extended Market Hours Begin to Enhance Global Access
The NSE International Exchange has extended trading hours to 23.5 hours daily, giving global investors wider access to Indian markets across different time zones.
Trading for the GIFT Nifty officially commenced earlier under an expanded schedule, following the NSE International Exchange's rollout of near round-the-clock operations. Under the revised framework, the morning trading session for NSE IFSC Nifty 50 Index Futures starts at 5:15 am IST, marking a shift that moves the opening time an hour and fifteen minutes earlier than the previous 6:30 am schedule.
The operational adjustments are designed to give global investors broader access to Indian financial instruments across multiple time zones while strengthening GIFT City's connectivity with international markets. The morning pre-open session now begins at 5:00 am, followed by normal trading hours extending until 3:40 pm. Order collection for the pre-close session continues until 3:50 pm, concluding the first major block of the trading day at 3:55 pm.
The second trading session maintains its previous schedule, with its pre-open block starting at 3:58 pm and normal trading running from 4:05 pm until 2:45 am IST the following morning. Market participants anticipate that the earlier opening will allow traders to react more efficiently to overnight developments in global markets before domestic trading officially gets underway in India.
GIFT Nifty is closely monitored by market participants and investors as an essential indicator of the likely opening trajectory for the benchmark Nifty index. Following the implementation of the enhanced framework, exchange officials reported that the initial day of operations concluded successfully.
Meanwhile, Indian equity markets wrapped up a subsequent trading session on a strong, bullish note, with benchmark indices extending their winning streak to five consecutive sessions. The BSE Sensex advanced 383.55 points, or 0.5 percent, to settle at 77,301.40, while the NSE Nifty 50 climbed 149.75 points, or 0.63 percent, to close at 23,960.60.
Broader markets outperformed major indices, with the Nifty MidCap 100 and Nifty SmallCap 100 posting respective gains of 1.55 percent and 2.0 percent. Sectoral performances varied significantly during the session, as automobile, energy, and telecom shares drove the upward momentum, whereas consumer durables and the IT sector experienced notable selling pressure.
Market analysts note that future market direction will largely depend on corporate quarterly earnings, crude oil price fluctuations, foreign institutional investor flows, and ongoing geopolitical developments. Sustained institutional participation and broader sectoral engagement will remain crucial for maintaining the positive momentum established on Dalal Street.
