Indian Equities Fall as Nifty 50 Closes Lower Amid Profit-Booking

The benchmark Nifty 50 declined for the second consecutive session, pressured by losses in capital goods, autos, and metal shares.

Indian stock market benchmarks finished lower on Wednesday, extending a downward trend as profit-booking and external economic pressures weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 index dropped 77.60 points, or 0.34 percent, to settle at 22,811.35, while the BSE Sensex fell 143.21 points, or 0.19 percent, to close at 73,709.69.

The session began with strong early gains following positive signals from Asian markets and optimism surrounding potential progress on an India-United States trade agreement. However, persistent foreign institutional investor selling, alongside elevated crude oil prices and high United States bond yields, quickly eroded those early advances. Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, noted that profit-booking intensified across various sectors, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding inflation and margin pressures.

Sectoral performance remained mixed throughout the trading day. The Nifty Chemical, Nifty Consumer Durables, and Nifty Metal indices experienced some of the steepest declines. Capital goods and engineering services also faced heavy selling pressure, dragging down the broader market sentiment. Conversely, the Nifty IT index demonstrated relative resilience, showing gains driven by encouraging corporate earnings reports.

Broader market segments suffered sharper losses than the headline indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 fell 1.58 percent, and the Nifty SmallCap 100 dropped 2.37 percent. Technical analysts observed that the Nifty slipped below its 20-day exponential moving average, suggesting that bullish momentum is cooling off as the index moves toward a period of consolidation.

Amid the broader market downturn, individual corporate updates captured significant investor attention. Hindustan Zinc made headlines by reducing its full-year zinc production cost estimates to between $825 and $850 per tonne, bolstered by stronger output and byproduct realization. Meanwhile, market participants closely monitored the ongoing launch of Jio Platforms' initial public offering, which opened for public subscription as the largest such offering in the country's history.

Looking ahead, market strategists emphasize that near-term market direction will depend heavily on the breadth of upcoming corporate earnings delivery, further developments in trade negotiations, and foreign capital flows. A durable moderation in global crude prices and currency volatility remains crucial for achieving sustained market stability.
