French Communist Lawmakers Back Jean-Luc Mélenchon for 2027 Presidency

A significant political shift has emerged within the French National Assembly as nine members of the Communist and Overseas group have announced their support for Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s 2027 presidential candidacy. This move represents a direct departure from their own party’s official position, which favors the candidacy of French Communist Party (PCF) national secretary Fabien Roussel.

The group of nine lawmakers includes four members of the Communist Party and five representatives from overseas territories. Among the signatories is Stéphane Peu, the president of the parliamentary group, who described the decision as an act of conscience. The lawmakers stated that their choice was motivated by the urgent need to prevent a victory by Marine Le Pen, the leader of the Rassemblement National, who is currently viewed as a frontrunner in the upcoming election.

In a collective statement, the deputies explained, "As we approach a presidential election with immense stakes, we are taking our responsibilities, beyond our partisan ties." Despite their endorsement of Mélenchon, the lawmakers emphasized that they remain distinct from his party, La France Insoumise, noting that none of them are members or intend to join the movement. Stéphane Peu characterized the decision as a form of "civil disobedience," citing a strong alignment on policy issues between the dissenting deputies and Mélenchon’s platform.

The development is widely seen as a setback for Fabien Roussel, who has struggled to gain momentum in the early stages of the campaign. Recent polls indicate that Roussel is currently polling at approximately 2% of the vote. When approached for comment, representatives for Roussel declined to weigh in on what they described as a "personal choice" by the deputies.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon expressed his appreciation for the support on social media, stating he was "very moved" to stand alongside the Communist group in the effort to advance the left-wing coalition to the second round of the 2027 election. Elsa Faucillon, a deputy for the Hauts-de-Seine region and one of the signatories, noted that the decision was driven by the fact that the group shares "many more convergences than divergences" with La France Insoumise.

This internal rift underscores the broader challenges facing the French left as it attempts to organize ahead of the presidential cycle. While the Communist Party membership voted in September to support Roussel with 72% approval, the decision by these high-profile deputies to break ranks highlights ongoing tensions regarding strategy and the best path to electoral viability against right-wing opposition.
