The Paris prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday, November 4, that an investigation is underway following a significant cyberattack on the French banking group Credit Mutuel Arkea. The breach, which the bank described as a sophisticated external attack, resulted in the unauthorized transfer of funds estimated at nearly 100 million euros, or approximately $133 million. The investigation, which focuses on organized digital data system interference, has been assigned to the French Anti-Cybercrime Office.

According to the bank, the attackers managed to gain access to one of its internal accounts used for interbank transfers. Credit Mutuel Arkea emphasized that the intrusion did not occur through client accounts or its subsidiary, Fortuneo. Instead, the bank stated that the hackers bypassed security by compromising the platform of a third-party service provider. The institution clarified that the incident was not the result of human error, but rather a targeted and complex operation.

Once the breach was detected, the bank's security teams initiated emergency protocols, which included the temporary suspension of certain transactions to prevent further fraudulent activity. Most operations were restored by the following morning after the implementation of enhanced security measures. The bank noted that while the total impact is still being assessed, a portion of the stolen funds has been blocked, and efforts to recover the remaining assets are currently in progress.

The nature of the theft involved converting the stolen funds into cryptocurrency through specialized platforms. Blockchain investigator ZachXTB, who has been tracking the movement of the assets, suggested that the attack spanned several days. The investigator alleged that a delay in the bank's public disclosure of the incident may have allowed the perpetrators to launder approximately $30 million that could have otherwise been frozen by European authorities. Credit Mutuel Arkea has not confirmed the specific $133 million figure cited by some reports, though it acknowledged that the amount is within that general range.

Despite the scale of the theft, Credit Mutuel Arkea maintained that the incident does not threaten the overall financial stability or solvency of the group. The bank also moved to reassure its customers that no individual client accounts were compromised during the attack. The institution is currently working with law enforcement to identify the perpetrators and mitigate the long-term impact of the breach.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the European financial sector, highlighting the evolving risks posed by cybercriminals utilizing advanced technology. Security experts have long warned that even the most reputable institutions face significant threats from sophisticated digital intrusions. As the financial industry continues to integrate digital services, this event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges banks face in protecting their core infrastructure from increasingly complex global cyber threats.
