Francisco Conceição Handed Three-Match UEFA Ban After International Red Card
The Juventus forward faces a suspension following his dismissal during Portugal's Nations League match against Norway.
Francisco Conceição has been suspended for three matches by the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee following his expulsion during Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway at the Estádio do Dragão in the fourth round of the UEFA Nations League.
The red card was issued by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani in the 86th minute after the Portuguese winger received two consecutive yellow cards for dissent. According to the official match report, the UEFA sanction stems primarily from "insults and offensive language" directed at the refereeing crew.
Tensions continued to flare even after the ejection. As Conceição made his way off the pitch toward the locker rooms, he engaged in a verbal altercation with the fourth official. National team staff members ultimately had to intervene to escort the Juventus player away.
As a result of the suspension, Conceição will be forced to sit out Portugal's final two group stage fixtures. The team is scheduled to face Denmark in Braga on November 14 and Wales in Cardiff on November 17. Although Portugal has already secured qualification for the quarterfinals, the forward will also miss the first leg of the knockout round slated for March. However, the Portuguese Football Federation retains the option to appeal the UEFA ruling.
While the disciplinary ban sidelines him for international duty, the situation offers a minor upside for his club side. The player will remain in Turin to train through the international break, allowing him to work on regaining optimal physical condition following a previous sideline stint due to a dislocated shoulder.
In addition to his international suspension, Conceição has dealt with fitness setbacks at the club level. Juventus injury reports list him among the squad's unavailable players with an anticipated return targeted for Matchday 12 of the Serie A season.
Away from the pitch, the player's family background in professional soccer has frequently drawn public interest. His father, Sérgio Conceição, recently reflected on the difficult challenges of balancing a managerial career with family dynamics, recalling a painful professional moment when he had to drop his other son, Rodrigo, from a matchday squad while coaching at FC Porto.
