Former professional soccer player and prominent manager Pepe Mel is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville after suffering a stroke. The 63-year-old coach experienced the medical emergency on Sunday, November 1, in Seville, where he has resided for many years. He was successfully treated with surgery and is currently awaiting further clinical updates alongside his family.

The news of his hospitalization prompted numerous messages of support across social media from fans and sports figures. Among them, his daughter, Iris Mel, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram accompanied by a family photograph. Expressing her longing and hope, she wrote about their close bond and urged him to keep fighting.

"I know you are going to come back to me, I know it because you promised me that we were going to do more things together, and you taught me that promises have to be kept," Iris Mel wrote. She recalled plans for future travels and shared heartfelt memories, pleading with him not to leave her alone.

Mel, born in Madrid, built a notable career both on the pitch and in the dugout. As a striker, he came through the Real Madrid youth academy and later starred for Real Betis, where he was crowned the top scorer of the Spanish Second Division with 23 goals during the 1989-1990 season. He also played for Castellón, Granada, Benidorm, and Écija Balompié before retiring from playing at age 35.

Transitioning to management, Mel took charge of numerous clubs throughout Spain, including Getafe, Rayo Vallecano, Alavés, and Murcia. He is particularly revered by Real Betis supporters for guiding the club to two separate promotions back to the top flight of Spanish football, as well as steering them into European competition.

Beyond his deep ties to Betis, Mel's managerial career spans several international and domestic assignments. He has managed teams such as Deportivo de La Coruña, Las Palmas, Málaga, Almería, Tenerife, English side West Bromwich Albion, Greek club OFI Crete, and Moroccan team Ittihad Tanger.

Even while between managerial positions, Mel has remained active in analyzing the sport and offering commentary on emerging talents. Just a month prior to his hospitalization, he spoke with media regarding goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, correctly predicting that the player would soon earn consideration for the Spanish national team.

Medical staff and family members continue to monitor his recovery closely. As updates on his condition are awaited, the wider soccer community continues to send well-wishes to the veteran coach and his family during this challenging time.
