Former Rangers football player Kyle Hutton is scheduled to stand trial in February 2028 after being accused of killing a 40-year-old pedestrian in a road collision in South Lanarkshire. The incident occurred on November 2, 2024, on Farmeloan Road in Rutherglen, where Hutton's vehicle allegedly struck Victoria Cairns.

Cairns sustained severe injuries from the impact and died in the hospital four days later, on November 6, 2024. Hutton, now 35, faces a primary charge of causing death by dangerous driving. Prosecutors allege that he was unfit to drive due to alcohol or drugs, operated his vehicle at an excessive speed for the prevailing conditions, and failed to make proper observations of the road ahead.

In addition to the dangerous driving charge, Hutton faces alternative allegations of careless driving. He is further accused of failing to cooperate with police breath and drug tests, as well as failing to provide two specimens of breath to determine his ability to drive following the incident.

During a procedural hearing at the High Court in Glasgow, defense solicitor advocate Graeme Brown KC entered a plea of not guilty on Hutton's behalf. Lord Scott presided over the session and scheduled the trial to begin on February 7, 2028, noting that the proceedings are expected to last approximately four days.

During the court hearing, Brown advised the court that jurors may be shown potentially upsetting video footage as part of the evidentiary presentation. Furthermore, he indicated that Hutton's wife is likely to be called to testify as a defense witness. Hutton remains released on bail as he awaits the upcoming trial.

Hutton began his professional career in the youth academy of Rangers, making his senior debut for the club during the 2010-11 Scottish Premier League season. Over a five-year stint with the Ibrox club, he made dozens of appearances and secured a Scottish League Cup triumph in 2011 before pursuing stints with several other Scottish clubs, including St Mirren, Dumbarton, and Partick Thistle.
