Fire Disrupts Service on Mexico City Metro Line B

A fire near the Oceanía station damaged electrical cables, causing partial service suspensions and long delays for commuters on Wednesday.

A morning fire outside the Oceanía station on Wednesday disrupted operations along Line B of the Mexico City Metro, leaving a large portion of the transit line without train service. The blaze, which occurred in the area between the Oceanía and Deportivo Oceanía stations, severely damaged critical electrical cabling and forced transit authorities to implement a partial shutdown.

Preliminary reports suggest that an unhoused person ignited the fire while burning trash near the transit facilities. Police subsequently arrested a suspect in connection with the incident, and the individual was handed over to the Public Ministry to determine official legal responsibility.

Because of the infrastructure damage, the Collective Transportation System (STC) announced that trains are operating on a provisional basis only between Buenavista and Oceanía in both directions. Meanwhile, the remaining stretch from Deportivo Oceanía to Ciudad Azteca, which serves travelers commuting between the capital and neighboring municipalities such as Nezahualcóyotl and Ecatepec, is completely closed to train traffic.

To help mitigate the disruption for thousands of affected commuters, the Passenger Transport Network (RTP) deployed a fleet of complimentary buses. These vehicles are transporting passengers back and forth between the Oceanía and Villa de Aragón stations, though crowds and saturated conditions have left many travelers facing significant delays.

Adrián Rubalcava, the general director of STC Metro, stated via social media that specialized maintenance crews are actively performing complex wiring splices. Officials warned that these intensive repair efforts could potentially extend throughout the entire day as teams work to restore the electrical supply safely.

Transportation officials have strongly advised citizens to budget extra time for their morning and evening commutes, follow instructions from station personnel, and monitor official communication channels for real-time updates regarding the resumption of full service along Line B.
