Fiorentina Defeats Sassuolo 4-2 to Climb Out of Relegation Zone
Franco Mastantuono and Armand Laurienté shone in a six-goal thriller at the Mapei Stadium on Monday night.
Fiorentina secured a crucial 4-2 victory against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium, moving out of the Serie A relegation zone. Led by manager Paolo Vanoli, the visiting squad put on a strong second-half performance to overcome a determined Sassuolo side managed by Alberto Aquilani.
The match began in a quiet atmosphere as fans from both clubs protested outside the stadium against ticket prices and scheduling by the league. Once play opened up, Sassuolo struck first against the run of play in the 25th minute. Sebastiano Esposito launched a quick counterattack, sending Armand Laurienté through to score a calm low shot past goalkeeper David de Gea.
Despite trailing, Fiorentina found an equalizer right before halftime. Alieu Njie passed to Mateo Pellegrino inside the penalty area, and the striker maneuvered past his defender to fire a precise shot into the bottom-left corner, bringing the score to 1-1 at the break.
The visitors shifted the momentum just five minutes into the second half. Marco Brescianini delivered a pass to Njie, who beat goalkeeper Stefano Turati with a low, driven shot from outside the box to give Fiorentina a 2-1 lead.
Sassuolo responded in the 65th minute when Nemanja Matić provided a cross for Laurienté. The French winger struck from a tight angle into the top-right corner. After a VAR review for a potential handball in the buildup, the goal was confirmed, evening the match at 2-2.
Fiorentina regained the advantage in the 79th minute. Substitute Pedro Gonçalves set up Franco Mastantuono, who controlled the ball and released a left-footed strike from the edge of the box to make it 3-2. In stoppage time, Victor Valdepenas sealed the victory by finishing a quick counterattack to secure the 4-2 final score.
With this result, Fiorentina climbs higher in the standings, while Sassuolo remains near the bottom with the league's most challenged defensive record after suffering consecutive heavy defeats.
