FC Barcelona Targets RB Leipzig Defender Castello Lukeba for Summer Transfer

The French center-back has reportedly changed representation as he seeks a move to a major European club.

FC Barcelona has identified RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba as a primary target for the upcoming summer transfer window. The 24-year-old French international has emerged as a key defensive prospect, drawing significant attention from the Catalan club due to his technical proficiency, ball-playing ability, and physical presence as a left-footed center-back.

In a move signaling his intent to pursue a new challenge, Lukeba recently switched his representation to Excellence Sport, the same agency that manages Barcelona defender Jules Koundé. Reports indicate that representatives from the agency have already held discussions with Barcelona sporting director Deco regarding a potential transfer. While the player is reportedly eager to join the Spanish side, any formal move remains contingent on Barcelona's strategic planning for the next season.

Barcelona's interest in Lukeba is driven by a desire to bolster their defensive line with a player capable of adapting to their specific tactical style. Club officials view the defender as a complete player with significant room for development, noting his speed and aerial prowess as qualities that would complement their current squad. Although the club previously explored his availability, they opted against a major defensive investment at the time, a decision that has been scrutinized following recent injuries within the squad.

Financial considerations will play a significant role in any potential negotiations. Lukeba’s release clause is set to decrease from 80 million euros to 65 million euros this coming June, making him an attractive option for major European clubs. While Barcelona is monitoring the situation closely, they have indicated that a transfer is unlikely during the current January window due to both financial constraints and the stance of RB Leipzig, who have expressed no desire to release the player mid-season.

Beyond his club duties, Lukeba has recently been in the spotlight for his participation in the UEFA Champions League. During a recent match against Manchester City, the defender was involved in a challenging moment when he inadvertently turned a cross into his own net, contributing to a 3-2 victory for the English side. Despite this setback, his overall performance profile continues to attract interest from several top-tier clubs, including multiple teams from the English Premier League.

Barcelona is currently maintaining a list of potential defensive reinforcements, with Lukeba listed as a priority. The club is also evaluating other young, left-footed prospects, including Arthur Dias, Vitor Reis, and Youri Baas. However, Lukeba is considered the most established option among those currently under consideration. As the summer approaches, Barcelona will need to weigh their financial capacity against their need for defensive stability to determine if they will proceed with a formal bid.
