Explosion Rips Through German Apartment Building in Regensburg, Leaving Several Injured
Search efforts remain stalled as structural damage prevents rescue teams from entering the charred complex.
A powerful explosion tore through a multi-family residential building in the southern German city of Regensburg early Wednesday morning, injuring multiple people and sparking an intense blaze that threatened neighboring properties. Emergency crews rushed to the scene in the city's Kasernenviertel district, where search and rescue operations were quickly complicated by catastrophic structural damage that left the structure on the verge of collapse.
The blast occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. local time, waking nearby neighbors who immediately contacted emergency dispatchers to report a deafening detonation. According to police officials, the force of the explosion blew out two exterior walls, creating a fireball and leaving a massive hole across the building's facade. Heavy debris was hurled onto the adjacent street, and the apartment block was quickly engulfed in flames, directly impacting at least four separate housing units.
Concerns quickly centered on unaccounted-for occupants who may have been trapped inside during the detonation. Upper Palatinate police stated that two individuals were believed to have been in the building when it exploded and remained missing hours later, characterizing their situation as "particularly critical." Initial estimates from the fire department had previously suggested three people were missing, though officials noted it remained unclear whether all of them were present at the moment of the disaster.
Conflicting figures emerged regarding the exact number of casualties treated at the scene. Authorities confirmed that at least four residents sustained serious injuries and were transported to regional hospitals. An intervening police officer was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation but was subsequently discharged. Initial emergency reports placed the total number of injured at five, with a police spokesperson warning that the overall casualty count could rise as recovery efforts proceed.
The severe structural instability prevented emergency crews and search dogs from immediately entering the damaged apartments. Around 100 firefighters were deployed to battle the flames, joined by numerous ambulances and structural engineers from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, who worked to shore up the exterior and interior walls. Fire officials warned that the blast had compromised not only the primary building but also two neighboring homes, putting all three properties at imminent risk of falling.
In response to the structural hazards, emergency personnel evacuated 27 residents from the three affected residential buildings. Displaced occupants were temporarily sheltered at a nearby inn while municipal authorities worked to coordinate longer-term accommodations. Police confirmed there was no broader threat to the public, though residents in the surrounding neighborhood were urged to avoid the vicinity and keep their distance due to dense smoke drifting from the site.
The underlying cause of the destructive explosion remains unconfirmed. Fire officials initially suspected a possible gas leak after discovering that gas was present inside the structure, but authorities cautioned that the inquiry was in its preliminary stages. Criminal police investigators specializing in arson and blast investigations have begun gathering evidence at the perimeter. Law enforcement officials have also appealed to neighborhood residents, asking witnesses who observed suspicious activity or heard unusual noises before the early-morning blast to come forward.
