Everton secured a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United on Thursday night at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, advancing to the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Manager David Moyes' team dominated the match with two first-half goals and a clinical second-half finish, putting an end to Newcastle's run in the tournament.

The Toffees had to navigate the match without England winger Jack Grealish. The 31-year-old on-loan player from Manchester City was dropped from the squad due to a breach of club discipline, which stemmed from an unauthorized absence from training. Club officials confirmed prior to kickoff that he was unavailable for selection.

Despite missing Grealish, Everton opened the scoring in the 34th minute. James Garner showed sharp vision from just inside the box to put the hosts ahead, moments after Everton captain James Tarkowski executed a crucial defensive challenge against William Osula at the other end.

Everton doubled their advantage shortly before halftime. Hayden Hackney netted his first goal for the club since arriving from Middlesbrough for 16 million pounds over the summer, finishing smoothly following a setup by Thierno Barry.

Barry added a third goal for Everton in the 69th minute, capitalizing on a neat cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to score his seventh goal of the season. Newcastle managed a late consolation goal in the 89th minute through a header by Dan Burn.

The late goal sparked a brief on-field fracas that resulted in yellow cards for Tarkowski, teammate Jordan Pickford, and Newcastle's Joelinton. With the win, Everton moves on to face Fleetwood Town, a fourth-tier League Two side that pulled off a major upset by eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal.

Everton, who have never won the League Cup and have not claimed a major trophy since the 1995 FA Cup, will travel to face Fleetwood in the next round. Meanwhile, Newcastle will look for an immediate response when they host Everton in a Premier League fixture at St James' Park.
